bass painting?

i dont know if this is the right place to put this but i wanted to painy my bass, or a bass i am buying. i am getting a white p-bass. i wanted to paint it red & stick a mirrored pickguard on it. where can i go to paint my bass?do i go to a luthier or a tech??anywhere special??

If you do not wish to paint it yourself. Take it to a Luthier or Guitar shop to have them recommend someone. Another option would be a motorcycle refinisher. Large auto paint shops would probably not be interested in a job so small. Rethink, doing it yourself, it is fun and rewarding and there are many articles, videos and forum posts to give you all the info needed.

Krylon makes a whole line of paints under the Duplicolor name that are made for automobile touch up and other hobby painting. They are very durable and come in a wide variety of colors. And some of the come in an anodized look (Metalcast,) and others are made to change colors from differenct angles (Mystic).

It may sound odd at first to use car paint on your guitar, but the history of guitar paints is a history of automobile paints. Back in the day Fender would use what Dupont had available in any given year from the paint they were developing GM.

My daugter and I recently used the Metalcast purple and the black "Effex" (which has micro multicolored sparkle) to sunburst her P-bass copy. And I am about to use the Metalcast purple to paint the edge of my Paisley build.

You might take a look at their page. They not only llist their producs but have good tutorials and pictures from customers projects.

And you do not have to go to a Guitar shop to get paint. The Duplicolor site shows vendors that carry their paint. I go to Napa or AutoZone. Not to dis Stew Mac but why pay for a specialty product when you don't need to.

There is a company that will paint your bass or guitar for you if you ship to them. They have been mentioned here before on TB and seem to have a good reputation and affordable pricing.

Sorry, but I don't remember their name and a quick search didn't bring any threads up for me so you'll have to find it yourself unless someone else remembers who they are and posts a link. I do know the have a website with lots of pictures and they quote prices for "standard" paint jobs and options.

Another possibility is to prep the bass yourself and then have a local auto body shop spray the paint on for you. Some people have done this and have generally been able to talk them into doing the job for about $40-75.
