bass player magazine

I have about had it with BP anyway. Gear reviews tend to be my favorite thing, but BP seems to not have enough for me. I know they are trying to be well rounded, but it does not seem like it's about what I do at all. Don't know why but, the English Publications are far superior.

I subscribe to the UK version, I really don't feel it's that superior. Two page interviews, reviews etc. About the same to me at a hell of a lot more money.

Really? As a person that subscribed to BP for years I found Bass UK to be a really refreshing change.

You have interviews with tons of players you've never heard of. These people are UK famous, so it exposes me to a whole new range of music and players. To add to that, they have big name players in the mix and they actually interview people aside from the same old, same old in BP. Sure, Geddy and Stanley are great but I don't need to be reminded of them every month.

I feel the lessons are superior only because they offer more in-depth and more variety for all skills. I do miss the John Goldsby, Damien Erskine, and Ed Friedland columns but they rarely, if ever, got into advanced concepts.

There is far more discussion on the industry, including schools and gigging, in Bass UK than in BP. BP would never allow the Musician's Union to write an article.

BP did a spread on builders for a couple months and then stopped, that was pretty sweet. But Bass UK has a fellow who rebuilds basses. Once he is done, there is a new bass. This teaches people a lot about maintenance and upkeep.

The biggest piss off is that BP has absolutely no integrity when it comes to reviews. Bass UK at least do not have reviews where the cons are "none." I do not take any review serious that fails to find a fault.

You can get a lot of my articles online here . . . not all, but some. Click on "Sort by Date" to get the more recent ones. @Diabolus: There are quite a few articles on the diminished scale, melodic minor scales, bebop, Latin music, Funk, triad pairs, enharmonic spellings, rhythmic subdivisions, tumbao and playing in clave, Playing in 6 and 5, playing in 3, tetrachords, the augmented scale, classic intros, arpeggios from top to bottom/bottom to top, and a lot more.

I usually try and mix up doing profiles of famous bass players and their contributions, with beginner, intermediate and advanced technical articles. Of course, considering the wide range of the audience, it's hard to throw a perfect pitch to every reader every month. Thanks for the shout out, though!

Holy smokes.... total fanboy moment. Your column was the hardest part about me stopping my BP subscription. Each month I got the mag I would start reading it at your column. I was getting really into Bossa Nova when you published a couple articles on playing Latin styles, including the tumbao.
