Bass Recommendations

Any bass can be used for any genre. Find one that YOU like and feels good to play.

I think this is generally very true. However there are certain characteristics that lend themselves toward a "type" of sound output especially when combining pickups.
I think you may find more and more variation with a multi pup active Bass. Yet for consistency and electronic stability there's a lot to be said for a passive jazz.

However for the most part price and playing venue may be very important. If you're not doing that well financially, you may want to "cap" what your willing to spend and make a considerable list from that. If you have no amp or are disappointed in the one you have, you certainly need to figure that in.

For total variation I would thin a G&L Tradition has about as wide a spread as one could hope for, yet is well below $700-$800. I would 1st make a list of your actual financial limitations because that is perhaps the most profound inhibiting factor.
