I don't know the gauge that Reggie is using.you can get the strings, you would just have to get the proper thickness and take it from there.just do a little experimenting with the gauges,Im working on a set of strings with a co.that would be perfect for what your trying to do.the pickups that Bartolini did for me were made to my specs in colabaration with Bill.they have a winding that allows the low response to vibrate more tighter in the lower range than most pickups have.sometimes the more winding the brighter, and the preamp is a little brighter than most preamps.the pickups and electronics that Reggie has on his 10 string bass are EMG and they are not not custom.
as far as pickups go,try a few that are stock and let that be your reference point.one of the keys is not so much the pickups only, but how much power your pushing out, that is where you would get most of your low end non muddy clarity from.I dont use 15's never have.I use 10's and sometimes 12's.I go back and forth between Ashdown amps and cabs and Hartke amps and cabs.for the non believers I even use an Ashdown 5oo wt 2x10 combo.and it works just fine.as far as a string as Low as my C# goes to reproduce a note that clear there is a strong concentration put on the tightness and how many windings are placed on the core wire.and it also has to do with your set up on the instrument, remember proper string vibration can be affected by how low or how high your action may be.if you can take the thickest uprite bass string and get a good clean tone out of it,why not an electric string that is nowhere near the uprites thikness.K99 I will pm you my home #.
