Bass Whammy: Good Or Bad?

If you do a search and find ten threads on it, but....

It all comes down to the music you play. If it's just straight up bass playing than you're wasting your money.

If you do experimental, chordal, or a lot of harmonics, it can worth it, but is not something your going to use all the time.

It pretty much permanently disfigures your bass (yes you can fill the hole), are costly to buy and install.

On the other hand I love mine and would not be without one, but that's just me.

Big dive bombs would be cool but then you would be out of tune.

Kahlers when installed properly stay in tune dive bombing, but you are right, for normal bass playing is totally unnecessary, and even a possible annoying distraction.

But so is that 7 string chapman fan fret thing, unless to doing something different, certainly not for that cover band or jazz gig!

I just recently have found flatwound strings will come back to tune better, I love mine, as everyone has said not the most useful tool, I like to pitch shift and bomb powerchords, goes over well at jamm sessions.

I've been thinking of throwing a whammy on my foundation but I don't know. Good hear that they stay in tune though. That's one thing I always notice when guitarists use em is they are usually out of tune when the wanking is finished.:bassist:

That's usually a Strat. I knew a guitarist that had a Strat and if he ever used the trem, the guitar would go out of tune!

Floyd Rose & Kahlers if installed & set up right stay in tune.

There is one very useful thing I use my whammy for, and that's to simulate a fretless. I have fun with my bass with the whammy, but I have no desire to ever own another one.

once i played a modified fender jazz bass that had a whammy bar on it.

the first 14 seconds of playing it i HAD to have it.

after that the fun was over and i realized i wouldent trade a half eaten snickers bar for a bass with a whammy bar..

I don't see how one would be used unless you wanted to annoy the guitar players....give them a little dose of their own medicine.

LOL:hyper: That's funny.:D

I annoy my guitard by tapping at the end of the odd song like EVH. Drives him crazy.:D

Anyways, I don't personally see the need for a bass tremelo. I have a bass wah and barely even use that.

To each their own.
