Bassist as a band leader

I wouldn't see why the bassist couldn't be the band leader. Anyone in the band could. Doesn't necessarily mean they have to take all the solos and what not. Jaco led his Word of Mouth big band. Sure he took solos but I think he big band showcased his compositions and arrangements more. Same with Mingus. I have also heard of a lot of drummers being the band leader...they arrange and write tunes .
