Bassist on a budget $250.

As the title says, I am looking for a used bass for $250. I am a big fan of the Ibanez SR650 but that's obviously out of my price range. I like Ibanez for the necks and tonal flexibility. I found this bass but i'm of course, a little wary considering I haven't played it. Ibanez SR 480 Soundgear 4 String Bass Wood Finish

Try Facebook Marketplace (basically, online classifieds). I can't speak for other areas, but you can't swing a cat around here without hitting something Ibanez Soundgear. Plus side: since you set the range, everything is local to you, so no shipping.

I love SR basses too. I also agree that most of the Fender-ish necks are a bit chunky compared to the Ibanez profile. That's why I suggest Peavey Foundations. Their necks are in the same vein as Ibanez and they are still severely undervalued. Being an lover of all things Ibanez, I'd also suggest looking for a ratty SR500 as their finishes were notoriously fragile but the necks and sounds were still amazing (never mind, seems the prices have now caught up with the quality...sadly for me). Either way, patience will net you the result you desire OP.

Plus if there's a zombie apocalypse, with a Peavey you can smash your way to the venue and still be in tune.

Buy a Peavey Fury USA for $150 - $200.

I don't think that really exists anymore. I haven't seen an acceptable old Fury for less than $300 in a long while.

I think it's pretty regional. I'm on the Tennessee-Georgia border and drove to Kentucky to buy my Foundation, but it saved me a couple hundred bucks. There's a local guy who has a huge amount of Peavey stuff, basses and guitars, priced quite high on Craigslist. He had Predators in darned near twenty colors, priced in the $400 to $500 range depending on color. I'm not sure how much he's moving but his prices drive up other sellers' Peavey prices.

That said, I've seen some ludicrously low prices on Soundgear basses around the Chattanooga area. If I had the room (financially, physically and in my loving wife's tolerance) I'd have picked up a couple by now.

This bass is everything I expected it to be and more! The active EQ, and pickups make for an incredibly flexible bass. One of my favorite tones right now is soloing the jazz pickup and cranking the mids all the way up to get a nice honky sound.

Excellent Choice! Damn, I love me some Ibanez SR Goodness. Like they were made for my hands. The neck is super fast, light and ergonomic. Makes me wonder if I ought to sell a few basses gathering dust.......
All you need is some knobs!
