Basslines SJB3 for Slap ?

I bought Basslines SJB1, Dimarzio MOdel J, Bart 9#j1, and the original fender jazzbass ( that's all I can find in store). And I'm not satisfied with their slap tones.

Before I spend my money on another pickup (thinking about SJB3 quarter pounder next), so what do you think about the QP's Slap tone ??

Which one of the pickups that you've tried got you closest to the tone that you desire?

If they were all equally disappointing, it may be a tonal deficiency in the instrument itself. The pickups can only receive vibrations that are actually happening in the strings, which depends on factors like materials, design, etc.

Have you tried switching out your set of strings for something new/different? That could give you a new view on some of those pickups you have.

I'm using MIA fender J-bass, and new Dadario Prosteel strings. I knew about the new strings theory and the bass is acousticly perfect.

Not all disappointing, I bought model J and SJB1(still installed) recently and found that they have a kinda muted high. THe closest tone that I desire is the original pickup but I want more highs and more lows.

The reason I want to have great slap tone from the bass and pickup becoz I move from one amp to another amps time to time on difrent gigs. Play mostly Fusion and Jazz. so I dont want to mess around with the eq on amps.

All that left and available in nearby store are the SJB3 and the Ultra jazz. But they have the ultra jazz only for the bridge pickup, so SJb3 is what left in a set.

anyone has soundclips of slapping on a QP ?

i think the choice is problematic for a real slappy funky sound unless you like the old and damped sound of the early and the 70 slap years.

for modern slap sound you should consider- apart from the right sayings in the other posts: have a good bass and strings first that fit the desired slap sound....-

well the better pick ups for modern slap a the bartolini soapbars and of cause the music man style pickups.

the p/j combinations i know are more rude and rocky. the better way is to go with other pickup concepts........

This is from my J bass with SJB3s, both pickups all the way up, tone dimed. The strings are DR Hi-Beams, but they are quite old. I'm not much of a slapper either :)

Woah. I just realized who you are! You've got a bunch of awesome videos on YouTube! I remember watching your Tom Sawyer and Sweet Child O Mine shortly after I started playing. You've got some great vids.


Sorry about getting off topic. I haven't gotten my Quarter Pounder for my P Bass yet, but hopefully it sounds good. I don't slap a lot, but it'd be nice to get a solid tone. Hopefully it'll get here soon!
