Basslines that surprisingly kick your butt

I was going to be in a cover band, it didn't pan out, but in the meantime I learned the basslines to some cool tunes... One of the songs was Stone Temple Pilot's "Sour Girl". I was familiar with the song, I'd heard it on the radio, but never paid much attention to it until I tried to learn the bassline. HOLY HECK, what a crazy and amazing bass part this song has! I was only able to learn it thanks to a great YouTube video by a fellow TBer, and even then never completely nailed it.

Actually it's no surprise, his lines seem simplistic but have a deceptive rhythmic and melodic complexity to them. A very underrated bassist and songwriter.

I knew it wasn't a simple song, but it is kicking my butt more than I thought it would.

Suzie Q - Creedence Clearwater. Notes all over the neck. The Kick drum is only played on the off-beat throughout the song so bass REALLY needs to lay it down solid & fat for the song to have any kind of groove. Gets tiring & monotonous about halfway through.

Livin on a Prayer - prolly gonna lose whatever street cred I have for saying this, but back in my cover band days I really enjoyed playing that song. When you're locking that line in with a solid drummer and the dance floor is packed, it's good times.

As a whole I never struggled with it, BUT part of that was that my main band wussed out on the key change cause the singer couldn't get that high. We just played it in E all the way through. When I played it with another cover band that did it the right way -- with the key change -- then it got a little trickier. I don't remember what key that song ends in but the higher key definitely doesn't fall under the fingers as comfortably as E.

Also +1 to Saw Her Standing There. Especially if you're trying to sing at the same time.
