First I’ve heard of it. How does the Shazam component work? I mean like is it running on a self-contained tablet or something?

I may not know what I’m talking about since I haven’t and probably won’t see it.

They don't actually use Shazam until the end of the show. The majority of the show is contestants trying to beat each others times to name the song correctly.
In the final round they have a chance to win $1M USD if they can name 6 songs correctly before the Shazam app does.

We've watched it if we happen to catch it, but don't go out of our way. It's amazing how little people know about songs.

But I agree: October was much more... ahem... interesting to watch.
