Personally I'd just stick with nickel rounds. They'll reveal your short comings enough and will probably be your gentlest option while still having strings that will make your mistakes shine through.
On a side note, I've just begun teaching bass and guitar to a very limited number of people due to time constraints. The only complaint I've had about playing from every single person I'm teaching now is finger strength and strings hurting fingers problems.
I remember the first few weeks I started in particular being difficult, but right now I'm telling most of the people I work with to just work through it. I think when it really comes down to it you'll be glad your fingers are used to the strings that you like playing and you like the sound of because going softer will always mean a small adjustment in the future anyway.
