Beginner with a decision to make

Hey guys,first post here.
I've been playing bass for about 8 months and have been enjoying it a ton. Never picked up an instrument until the bass which i started at age 30. Anyhow I've been thinking its time to upgrade my bass from the cheapo amazon special I have but can't spend a lot of cash. I found a mim fender jazz bass used for 200 and a squier jaguar vintage modified for 200 new also. I'm stuck. Any advice?

I play a lot of punk and alternative if that helps.

I started playing bass at 39. Welcome to the late bloomers club! :p

Listen to your ears and your hands, and you can't really go wrong. Get the one that fits your budget and sounds/feels better to you. Of course, you're going to get a bit more for the money if you buy used.

I agree with HolmeBass and Titania, they are both a good choice for the beginner bassist and you gotta play the right instrument that fits LIKE A GLOVE !! I started out with a Guild B-302, WRONG CHOICE!! It was way to big for me(I eventually got over it !!) But your doing the right thing, BABY STEPS, my friend !! Even though you are in your 30's, you should start out simple !! :smug:

between the two, the Jaguar would match your sound better(Punk, Hardcore, Alt) because of the split pickup. But to that extent I would be looking for a P bass. You may be able to find a Squier Classic Vibe used at GC. Or if you can go up abit more you could get this

Congrats on becoming a bass player and welcome to TalkBass. May it bring you many years of enjoyment. Just my opinion but I'd take a jazz bass over a jaguar any day assuming both instruments are in good shape and have straight necks. I had a MIM Jazz a few years back. Upgraded the pickups with Bartolinis and it sounded and played great. I'll probably regret getting rid of it for the next thousand years or so.

I would go with the Jazz myself. Now both those basses are great basses. The VM's are really nice for the price. But to me, the MIM would be a slightly better choice. Thats just me though. I feel its just a tad od a step up from the VM line.

Welcome!! Like some of the others, I started 3 years ago at age 38! I've only fumbled with both of these at GC. However, I think most everyone is right that you probably can't go wrong with either. Sound wise, not sure it will make a huge difference, but naturally everyone has their opinion. The fun part - just run with (the more comfortable) one of them and if down the road you want something else, well, that's what GAS is all about!!!

I'm guessing by your screen name you're an Aussie, yes? But a more relevant question is, "Are you currently in Australia?" If you're in the U.S. right now, most of us will be able to recommend a number of online and brick-and-mortar places to check out. For example, I often suggest people check out Guitar Center's used database. Whenever I've spotted something I'm interested in, I call the store, have an associate take a look at the item for a quick physical inspection and if it's within driving distance, I go and check it out for myself.

I've taken a chance a few times on something too far away to inspect, but the only time I ever had to return something was because the neck wouldn't fit on a parts-bass project of mine. Regardless, there's a 30-day return policy. Even if I bring it back to another store, I get my refund, but not the extra $25 I spent on shipping. And given the hassle it would've been to re-box, tag and ship it back to it's store, that's small potatoes.

Now, on to your bass-related question; about the Jaguar, what is the pickup configuration? Better still, is it one of these?

The only one of these that just didn't do it for me was the "HB" model, but that could either have been a result of a poor/non-existant set-up by the store carrying it or just my personal preference. I haven't had a chance to give the "SS" a proper trial. No one has it near me.

If it was my money, I'd personally lean towards the Fender Jazz, but that's my personal preference. I like the look and feel of the off-set, contoured body. The dimensions of both necks are almost identical, so that's not an issue. That is, unless one is glossy and the other satin-finished along the back of the neck. It can be an issue for some players.

The only thing that concerns me is that they're charging the same price for a used MiM Jazz as the new Jag. I usually only see a Fender Jazz that inexpensive when there's cosmetic finish damage or something's not quite right. If they do maintenance there, I'd ask if they can throw in a set-up for free. If they resist, then ask for it at half-price. If they say, "We already did a set-up", then ask for a full set-up that includes checking the pots (the potentiometers under the knobs), pickup height, truss rod action, string intonation and removing any fret buzz. If any of these are out, it can make a bass sound and/or feel unplayable.

Welcome to TalkBass and Happy Hunting, Bill Ford of AU!

EDIT: Oh, and Welcome fellow Late Bloomer! I, too, started later in life. I used to joke that getting myself a bass for my fortieth birthday was the closest thing I'd get to a "mid-life crisis" purchase. Not a sports car or a barely-legal girlfriend (both too much maintenance ;)), but a Fender Aerodyne instead.

Klaus Flouride of the Dead Kennedys and Daryl Jennifer of Bad Brains both played jazz basses. There is no reason to believe a jazz bass can't play punk rock. Any bass can play punk rock. OP, pick the one that speaks to you, as long as the neck is true, it should be fine.

It's so cool to read all this great feedback and support! Kudoz to TalkBass and its members. As a new player, it would be slightly easier to play the Jag. Its body is smaller than the Jazz body and the scale length is shorter too.
I pull out a Jag Vintage Mod bass I put Quarter Pounds on and love gigging it. Nowadays one can get so much more for the money than back in the day. So "Late Bloomers" are fortunate. Go buy more basses! Playing them will keep you young.

Thanks for all the responses! It was a huge help.

So I took a long lunch today and went to the two music stores where to two candidates were. I played the squier first. It was nice, but it was the short scale which I wasn't crazy about. It felt a little light (I guess I like a little more heft because I'm a big dude). Played beautifully though. Then went to the other shop and plugged in the Fender J-bass. No competition. The j-bass was the one. Played great, loved the way it felt, sounded fantastic. Upon some close inspection, I found why the price was so low. There's a couple small chips in the paint and a chunk of paint missing on the bottom corner. I can definitely live with it plus it adds a little character. I need to lower the action a bit but other than that, I'm psyched with my buy.

Here she is :)
