Nope Avatar blatantly ripped off an old sci fi story called "Call me Joe". If you read Call me Joe and then watch Avatar the similarities are uncanny.

The author of Call Me Joe - John Campbell also wrote one of my favorite sci-fi stories - Who Goes There. That story was the basis for 'The Thing' movies of which the one directed by John Carpenter was superior..
I thought they borrowed heavily from Roger Dean as well. When I first saw it I expected to see Roger Dean's name in the credits as Art Director or something. I was amazed there was no Roger Dean involvement. The floating islands, the coloured flying lizards, the stone arches, etc all looked like classic Roger Dean to me.

I like the version from the 50's in black and white. If you put the movie in the context of the cold war going on at the time it gives it new meaning.
I'm actually a bit disappointed. So much tracing and it came out pixelated.Anyone want to tell me what I should have done? I used the pencil tool in gimp.
I actually dig the pixelated look better.
