I intended to make this post sooner, but I have taken more time to get to know the pedal.
TC FLASHBACK MINI.
So, I love delay. I have an original DM2 that is my most prized pedal by far. Very very much analog, and in many ways it is a metric against which other analog delays are judged, much like the lauded Carbon Copy.
Now, having said this, I have only ever used analog delay.
Digital delay is AMAZING. I love that I can play an entire phrase, pause, and then have it repeat back to me. F'ng LOVE it.
So actual review:
Form factor: nice blue color, soft tactile footswitch, tiny foot print. ( this is my only 1590a enclosed pedal), rubber feet.
Effect quality: so, i definately hear the "sterility/coldness" of the digital delay, but the clarity of the repeats is awesome. And the pedal overall has a very modern spacious voicing.
I can get anywhere from slap back and reverb to infinite repeats and seven seconds of delay.
The first time I rolled up delay time I thought it had stopped working for a moment, and then a crystal clear facsimile erupted from the cab. I was grinning ear to ear.
With regeneration control (number of repeats) and feedback (repeat volume) all the way up, it cops the sound of an analog delay on the verge of screaming occilation fairly well, but I mean, the DM 2 stomps it for that application.
Now, the tone print thing is just crazy. I was dumbfounded until i realized that it is essentially dial-up, old school payphone technology.
For any of you who do not have experience with the Toneprint system,
You download the free app from TC on your phone, pick your pedal from the list, pick a toneprint, and then hold your phone next to your pickups. A strange dial-up sound is emited, and the LED on the pedal flashes from red to green for a moment. Now the pedal has been reprogramed! I thought this was really cool. There are some great delay styles available, as well as some flange and chorus options.
The real magic happened when I ran the DM2 into the flashback. The voicing of an analog delay with the versatility of the digital is beautiful.
huge ambient washes, bouncy rhythmic ping pong, so good.
I am incredibly pleased with this pedal, especially considering the flack that TC gets around here.
Currently my board is layed out in this order:
DM2 ( doesn't like high input gain, so it goes first)
Wooly mammoth clone (likes to be first)
Homebrew fuzz
Phase 90
Ehx enigma ( with expression pedal. This pedal is so much more usable with expression input)
Flashback mini
Stereo pulsar.
My board now achieves the sound in my head better than ever before.
