I found out about Nard's death while at sea on the USS Alaska, an Ohio-class submarine. We used to get radiograms that sometimes included random news items. One of them was about Nard dying in Japan. I was shocked, but no one had any idea who he was.

I was brushing up on “I’m Coming Out” the other day and was reminded of how the details in Bernard’s playing elevated bass lines to another level. I love the way he used note length in that recording - it makes all the difference to the grooviness of the bass part (on a side note, the CHIC mix of that song is way better to my ears than the final Motown mix - especially where the sound of the bass is concerned).

We (bassists) all have stories about revelatory moments where music/bass is concerned and for me one of those moments was when I heard the C’est Chic album for the first time.

One of my biggest regrets in life is never getting to see Chic play live in person. Such a gross oversight that Chic has yet to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. Especially since a lot of hip hop /rap artist have been who sample a lot of Chic music. Pitiful !!!!
