Best bass you've ever recorded with

I have recorded with tens of basses in the past and the feedback has always been good. But I took an Alembic Epic into the studio two days ago and the engineer was absolutely blown away by the tone.

What's the best bass tonally you've recorded in the studio with?

Anyone around here for any length of time know what I’m gonna say. Never met a recording engineer that didn’t like my Lull.

But I’ve played an Epic and I totally get engineers loving the tone of those, no doubt.

My Alleva Coppolo LG4. That said, I haven’t done a real recording with the 1963 Jazz which is absolutely killer in tone and balance.

It's hard to go wrong with an Alembic. I've used mine (basically, an Epic-shaped Europa) in the studio. It sounds amazing through a tube pre.

This one has gotten compliments from engineers too:

Just about the polar opposite of the Alembic, very organic sounding. Original Jazz pickups were rewound by Lindy Fralin, magic!

#1 - 1999 Music Man Stingray 4, 3 band EQ. Always sounded brilliant.

#2 - Moon JJ 4 string. Great bass, great sound.

Both of these serve a different tonal purpose.

My Squier Precision (P/J) has a great general P Bass tone, but also a fantastic bright, punchy tone as well.

The GSR206 has a glorious and variable tone shaping preamp, with deep, but clear low end...

And the Epic is the entry level Alembic. I've never even touched a Series I or II but can only imagine how good they must be.

when i had but one EB: it was the best sounding recording ax!

currently (i have a bunch of 'em), on recordings, i'm having a lot of fun with these two: (active), (passive).

Brought a couple basses to record Christmas songs for a charity cd. a custom shop G&L L2000 and a $250 fretless peavey foundation. The engineer had me use both, and wanted exaggerated fretless.... he was right. The cheap bass won out on that day.

The most expensive and worst bass ever was a vintage 70's Rickenbacker, most expensive piece of absolute crap I ever was stupid enough to buy.

Best bass, a lowly Aria Pro II, made in Japan in the mid 80's.

The Jerry Jones Longhorn, a high end, sort of boutique, clone of the Danelectro bass of the same name, which I really regret being stupid enough to sell, sounded amazing too though, especially in the stock pickup switch series setting.

It was a Warrior 5 string with the dual MM / Candybar pickup @ the bridge set-up. The growl and clarity was unmatched vs all the other basses I owned or were available in the studio at the time (2012). Re-release of one of the tracks:

My most recorded bass that always gets a positive reaction is "Toney" a '83 Carvin LB 50 Koa bass that has a set of EMG HB pickups and passive controls with an old set of strings. Toney just sits in that perfect spot in any mix or style. It has 3 "producer switches" IYKYK.

The player is the biggest factor, but my Epiphone Jack Casady has made it onto more records than any other bass in my collection.

Whenever in doubt, my early USA Lakland Glaub with the Fralins and Labella flats has always been "the one". In 20 years it has never let me down. That said, I've been breaking out of the "P first" mentality more lately--my last session (for a rock artist) I brought 4 basses and the P made it on to one track out of seven. The MVPs were two US G&Ls--a JB5 and Kiloton 5 w flats(which absolutely killed!). Next MVP, Jerry Jones Longhorn.

I recorded a demo recently for a local female singer with an Olinto P bass with flatwound strings; and when I heard it I was totally surprised! Good thing because I was about to sell the bass because I was not using it enough.
This one stays !

I almost always take a P bass to the studio but I also almost always take my Danelectro Longhorn bass. It records really well. Some of the younger producers I have worked with seem a little surprised when I take it out of the case but they are always impressed when we plug it into the board.
