best bassist in metallica

I like cliff because he was a very talented bassists and come on has anyone heard his bass lick in the four horseman thats sick
I have heard Trujillo through the years and he definitely has got the skills- but you would never know how talented he is by listening to his work with Metallica
Bob Rock was so superior to anyone else they've ever had.
I feel like taking three showers after saying that, I despise Bob Rock. My actual favorite is Cliff.

The way I look at it is not only did Cliff play better, but Metallica was in their prime with him! I believe he influenced the music heavily then. After his death, ...And Justice for All was released afterward with a lot of influence still from him. But the black album is when the change began. Then, their sound changed completely with newsted fully onboard. Black Album would be, IMO, the last decent album they put out.

Speaking strictly in terms of best bass player--as in best bass player period, not for Metallica, but just best bassist, then Trujillo is the man. Personally, I think his talent is wasted in the vast majority of Metallica's music, it just doesn't seem to fit anything he's ever done and in that style of music you don't need a super technically proficient player.
That being said, Cliff Burton was the best fit for the band. However, Newstead was excellent in his role with Metallica. Hell, he spent some 14 years with the band and during that time they put out some really good music and he held up his end of things quite nicely.
The other two listed in the poll don't count.

who voted for Jason Newstead are you kidding me really he is the worst bassist they have had out of all those guys for real are you guys kidding me???
Jason and Rob are both excellent bassists and did the job well with Metallica. But Cliff is who the band got going with. With that said I voted for Cliff Burton because "Master of Puppets" is my favorite Metallica album.
I'll also cast my stone in with Cliff. While it's purely subjective to agrue which one of 'Tallicas bassists are "better", my vote is bass(ed) purely on the fact that Cliff just FIT in better and i know that many people, myself VERY much included, were initially inspired to play the bass after hearing Cliff.
The first song i learned on bass was Orion. I know of about a half dozen or so bassist friends of mine that directly attribute their picking up the insturment to hearing Cliff. While i love Jason and like Trujillo... Cliff is just on another level for me!

Cliff. Rob is the better bassist by far, but Cliff made those early Metallica albums what they are, and the band haven't lived up to that standard since. IMHO, obviously.
Am I the only one who is thoroughly unimpressed by Cliff Burton? He is, to me, nothing more than a bad guitarist who picked up bass and never got much better. People praise his work on For Whom The Bell Tolls, but - short of the intro, which I think sounds horrible - the rest of the basslines for that song are exceptionally unoriginal and bland. He's a good song writer, I'll give him that - but as a bassist? I'm thoroughly unimpressed by his lack of technique and sloppyness.
Personally I choose Newstead followed closely by Trujillo. Newstead was a solid bassist - he wasn't flashy but he got the job done well. Trujillo is slightly the opposite for me - A decently solid bassist, but more flashy.

As far as being the "all-around" best bassist,I would have to go with Rob Trujillo.I simply base that on his past recordings.Awesome,awesome chops.He's a monster.I wish he would break out his old Tobias 5er.
