Was passing thru looking for something else, but found something Passinwind said that I wanted to expound on for folk passing thru that might not know it.

You can also tack in a small value resistor betwen the tone cap and ground to change both effective taper and the max cut feel. Something in the 1-5K range has worked well for me.

In many passive tone controls, there's a good, usable, pleasing range that can turn to bassy mud at some point further in the control sweep. With Passinwind's suggestion, you can expand the good range to the entire sweep of the control knob and eliminate the mud range. How? Super easy, barely an inconvenience.:

The fixed resistor adds a permanent electrical stop before the cap can drain off too much high freq to make it sound muddy. The extra resistance will add a little brighter top end when control is at full treble. But you now have the entire good range of the control pot to gracefully dial it back.
