Best Buy Music Center

There is a BB about 3 min from my house while GC is about 10 min and the largest locally owned guitar/ instrument shop is about 15min. certainly if I have a small need cable or whatnot I'll hit up BB for a big purchase (if I ever buy anything new) I would go to our local shop.

i think its great that best buy has incorperated music into a tech store. while true musicians may find the place lame or too simple, it is atleast spreading the wonders of music to more people. sadly the one near my house has 50 guitars and maybe 10 basses (all just peavy and fender/squires).

I was thinking about this earlier, and the feeling that I get when walking into the Best Buy instrument department is similar to walking into a Schmitt Music (for the Minnesota folks). There's gear there, but nothing that's going to interest me.

Dang I miss the family stores... we used to have about 20 in the cities...

We have one - I'll pay $2 more for strings and wait for them to arrrive as they know what the words "taper" and "guage" mean and that there are balanced and commodity strings.

BB is kind of geared toward the giftware type of consumer...

The cool thing is our local store is hiring off the better of the Tard Center staffers...

Don't forget the Rock Band / Guitar Hero phenomenon, which apparently has made a lot of kids switch to the real thing. And on top of that is making them listen to good music.

My kids play it and one of my daughters now loves Rush. She's 9, FYI.

I asked my luthier, who hosts guitar lessons in his shop, and he confirmed that there is a new wave of new musicians coming and there are requests from them to learn to play the tunes they pretend play on these games, stuff like Kansas.

I don't mind a new generation of young musicians.

Great analogy. Yes I'm familiar with Schmitt. Both places you walk in and it's just kind of a "meh". In both cases sometimes I'll drop in if I'm driving by just to see what's new, but it's not like I make a habit of checking into those places every couple of weeks like I do with our main locally owned store here.

Um, a couple stores in Houston have had instrument sections for a while. The one in Pearland is small, but I've heard that the store on Richmond and 610 is supposed to be much better. Haven't checked out yet though.

Take a look at their flyer online before venturing out.

We have one in San Antonio. The funny thing is that Sam Ash is in the shopping center next door and Guitar Center is basically across the street. The Best Buy stores tends to be about $50-75 more than the other chains on each guitar and needless to say, nobody knows what they're doing

One thing BB did for me was price match. I showed them where the Gibson Tbird had been marked down from 2100.00 to 1499.00 on MF website. The came down to that price and let me do 18mo in interest financing. That was the ONLY way I could've got a Gibson Thunderbird so I was pretty happy with them.
