best free music recording/production/editing software?

$60 for a personal (non-professional) license
Does everything pro tools does, active helpful community.

Not to derail but this is relevant - if you made click tracks in Reaper would they import to pro tools?

It looks like you have to force reaper to insert the click as audio
If you can export a click form Reaper as audio, you can import to pro tools.

Reaper also natively supports VST plug-ins, and there are a TON of free ones available that are extremely good.
Reaper is a great piece of kit.

As suggested above, Reaper is good and cheap (though not free).
I personally prefer the workflow of Tracktion and use the T5 version, which is now free.

Reaper. I have Protools, and still use Reaper. Pretty good community for support, too.
