Hey guys,

Sorry if this is a repeat; I couldn't find anything satisfactory with the search button.

Anyway, my dad has an 70's Small Stone. I pulled it out of the closet the other day and I fell in love. Big, warm, smooth goodness. It's vintage and sort of delicate though, so I can't really use it on a regular basis. What would be the best phase pedal to get as close to this sound as possible?

P.S. There are two settings on here, one is sort of subtle and the other is a more flangery type deal. I like the subtle one and dislike the flanger.

I use the Boss PH-3 right now. Some people don't like this phaser because it isn't very natural sounding. It works fine for me, though. What I really like about it is the step phase capability. Honestly, I prefer the step phase on my GT6B because it's more tweakable.

I plan on getting the Studio Eletronics ModMax Phase in the future, though. It has sample and hold (Step phase), an envelope follower, and the regular phase sounds nice too.

For nice subtle phasing I highly recommend the Tone Factor Nebula is roughly based on the MXR Phase 45 and Dod 201 but much cleaner and all the modern features you expect in a boutique pedal. I prefer this to every phaser I've tried which includes the current EHX Small Stone, Maxon PT999, Akai Intelliphase, MXR Phase 90, Boss PH-3 and Pigtronix EP-1.

I have the EH Nano Small Stone and i love it. It doesnt suck any low end out of my tone like some guitar effect do, and it sounds great. If you really like the vintage small stone, you should just get the newer small stone and it should sound very similar.

I just picked up a 70's small stone for $30 and it sound fantastic so thats your best bet is using what you have already(but since it isn't really an option). The other phaser I've used and enjoyed is the MXR phase 90, my secondary recommendation goes there

i like the MXR phase 90, personally. it's not as organic and juicy as the small stone, but it's real nice.

right now, i'm using a George Dennis Phaser. i like this because it sounds good to me (obviously), and because it has an effect level knob.

but i'd probably get the small stone for your tone. (or the Nano small stone- same sound, smaller and stronger enclosure!)

What do you mean by delicate? Is there something wrong with it? I have 70s Smallstone, and use it all the time, I've had it for around 15 years and never had a problem. Great sounding boxes Smallstones.

Thanks for all the input so far guys!

On the 70's Small Stone I have the insides are a little bit loose and rattle around, especially with the 9V. The casing doesn't look like it would survive on a pedalboard day in and day out, and finally I just don't want to risk damaging a beautiful vintage effect that's not really mine to throw around. :smug:

To just clarify, I want something as organic and funky as possible, not so much a harsher jet-type swoosh.

I've been curious about the nebula.....does it have any volume drop or spike when the pedal is turned on?

I can see you point if it isn't yours:D If it were mine I would: If it is lose tighten it, don't stand or jump on your pedals ;) and use a power supply instead of a battery [dod ones work with mine] :)

Try a few reissue Smallstones, US, Russian and nano, you have a vintage one to compare it with so it should be easy to discern weather or not they will get "that" sound.

Maestro Stage Phaser, some of the best phasing I've heard, these were designed by Moog way back when. Works great for bass, love the chewy slow sounds on it. This thing can get some speed going. Though, prepare to make way some real estate for this thing.

Hell it has a freakin' "BALLS" control how sweet is that!!! :D
