Best portable bass stand

I'm looking for a folding bass stand for gigs.
The requirements are that it folds as compactly as possible and that it holds the bass guitar securely (6-string bass).
My local store recommended Hercules 402B as "the best one I can find".
When I tried it, it looked fairly secure.

Can I do any better? Any other recommendations?

I use the 402B and the 302B. 302B folds flat and actually lays in my BG case with a plushly padded board between the Bass and the stand.

The 302B appeared less stable in the store. What's your experience? Did you ever have your bass fall over because of someone knocking the stand down?

I totally agree .... the Ultimate stand is a durable sucker

I play 7 and 8 string basses, all heavy with wide necks, and these stands are very solid. I'm not sure if a 9 string + bass would fit, depends on the width at the nut

I use an Ultimate. When I need multiple basses, I take a Hercules 3-guitar stand. They are both excellent, but the Ultimate is MUCH MORE portable and folds smaller.

in the uk we have one made by hercules cracking little stand, solid, folds down to nothing. and comes in a bright yellow bag.

NO stand will defend a guitar against abuse/carelessness. I like stands that don't rely on the neck for support, yet, the Hercules 412B is the only stand I trust to my Explorer-style Exploiter, due to the odd shape.

One review states it doesn't hold a Jazz bass well. What model bass are you using it with?

I'll use it with Ibanez SR706, but would like to use it also with future bases that I buy.

Depending on your definition of "as compactly as possible" I'd opine that those are mutually exclusive requirements.

I have a number of stands that "hold the bass guitar securely". I also have two really nice stands that fold so compactly that you can throw them in the accessory pocket of nearly any gig bag or bass case: the A-Flat Guitar Stand (which actually holds two instruments) and the Ibanez Casatama.

But the secure stands only fold up to ~2' long, and the compact stands won't keep your bass upright during an earthquake or a bumrush by excited fans.
