Does anyone own a Lakland Skyline 44-51? The split coil humbucker pickup on mine is thunderously loud and I've tried numerous sets of strings on it, but they all sound too bombastic and thumpy. I would be interested in finding a kinder, gentler string to use. I prefer flats on a P-bass, and this is a replica of the original Fender '51 but without the single coil. I've thought about Labella tape wounds. Any ideas would be appreciated. I currently have Ernie Ball cobalt flats medium gauge installed but I have also tried GHS Precision flats, D'Addario Chromes and Fender 1050L.

  2. Labella has been making strings for a long time and the deep talking flats might be a good bet. I haven't tried flats in a long time and never tried tapewounds but I've heard some good tones on YouTube from guys reviewing them. Rotosound trubass might work too. And aside from strings you might like your tone with your pickups set a bit lower. What it does is make it less boomy and it ads a little bit of tightness in the tone. I found this through lots of tinkering. Hopefully you find something that gets you where you want to be.
