Best tone

hmmm...
Scott Thunes - ultimate muddy Precision sound; in his own words "moronic" :D
Jaco's fretless stuff is perfect.
Flea's slap tone - especially on Uplift Mofo and Mother's Milk (he never does that annoying mid-rangey cheesey slap sound) also his tone on One Hot Minute.
JPJ's tone on Zeppelin II (I HATE playing like that - but he does it so well :p )
Also Chris Wolstenholme from Muse has a killer tone... as does Mr Claypool on the Hallucino-genetics DVD.
And I started with a Zappa guy, so I'll finish with one... Patrick O'Hearn. Great fretless sound, nice bit of treble, slight envelope.

Jaco's tone is pretty much perfect IMO.
Marcus Miller has the coolest slap sound ever, I love the way the lows are reeeaallly low sounding, and the highs are kinda wobbly, know what I mean?
Vic Wooten. I was just watching my BassDay 98 DVD, I forgot how great his bass sounds. Basically exactly how I want my bass to sound.

ooohhh...Mike Porcaro...wow...nice one...

he doesn't get much mention here, but definitely a rock solid performer with a sweet sweet sound. His brother, Jeff, was a drum idol of mine...no one did the 4/4 shuffle like Jeff Porcaro.

Yeah, the porcaro brothers are my influences. Jeff even said that Mike had better time than he.... now THAT is a bass player :D
:bassist:

after just watchin SRV at the el mocambo just then tommy shannon has great p-bass with flats tone

Okay let's see... A bit long, but those are my favorite tones (bassist with albums you can hear the tone I prefer on, mostly)

Jeff Caxide - Pretty much anything ISIS, and also Red Sparrowes.
Duncan Patterson - Especially Eternity and Alternative 4 by Anathema.
Eddie Casillas - Bruce Dickinson's Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding. Also his work with Tribe of Gypsies.
John Paul Jones - The Zeppelin years are awesome. Also, the 8 string work on the collaboration album with Diamanda Galas.
Sean Malone - Gordian Knot's Emergent.
Tony Levin - Pretty much anything he recorded :P
Luis Mariutti - On Angra's Holy land and Fireworks.
Martin Mendez - All the recent Opeth albums, especially starting with Blackwater Park until now.
Kristoffer Gildenlow - Especially on Pain of Salvation's The Perfect Element pt.1.
Collin Edwin - Tasty tone on Porcupine Tree's In Absentia and Deadwing.
Chi Cheng - Deftone's White Pony remains my fave by Chi.
Dave Edwardson - Neurosis' A Sun that Never Sets has really nice warm tones.
Duff McKagan - My first experience with bass playing, and still a favorite. Pretty much anything Guns and Roses, and of course Velvet Revolver.
Mike Inez - On pretty much all of Alice in Chains' material, and Slash's Snakepit's It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.
Hugh Stephen James Mingay - Especially on Ulver's Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and Arcturus' La Mascarade Infernale.

Heh, could almost have been a list of my favorite players too, if you look at it that way ;)

all good ones.

One of my FAV rock bass tones was Eddie Jackson from Queensryche. Talk about punch and grind. Check out "Eyes of a Stranger" or "Della Brown", sometime.

He and Scott Rockenfeld were one of the great underrated rythm sections in old-school metal. And they're still doing it.

+1 for Jackson.
I'd say Steve Harris' tone on the "Iron Maiden" and "Killers" albums.

It's time for an update.

Timmy C: He's kind of the tone God in my opinion. He's kinda psycho, but it's good.
Justin Chancellor: So melodic, and so strange, but it's awesome.
Paul D'amour: The best Ric with a Pick tone ever. End of story.
John Myung: So tight and crisp, especially on the B string.
Les Claypool on Hallucino-Genetics: It seriously sounds like a fart.
Tony Levin: I don't know how to describe it, it's just good stuff.
Geddy Lee on Rio: Probably one of the best overdriven tones ever.
