best way to set up this stuff

Hey guys, I'm in a fraternity and we have some great equipment, but people don't really know how to use them that well. We are just running music from an ipod usually anyways. Here is our set-up:

Two JBL JRX125 Dual 15" Speaker Cabinets (4 Ohms)

One Crown XLS 802 Amplifier (500 Watts per Channel at 8 Ohms, 800 Watts per Channel at 4 Ohms)

One Peavey PV 6 Mixer

We run the ipod through the mixer. I don't understand Ohms or resistance, but I'm trying to find the best way to maximize sound volume. Right now, we run two cables out of the power amp and into the mixer. Would it be better to "daisy-chain" the speakers? What does "daisy-chain" even mean? Is it the same as running in parallel or series?

Clearly, I don't know much about this stuff. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well first of all the jrx 125 is the biggest POS JBL makes so I would not describe it as great.:( I don't have a problem with the mixer or the amp though. :) I would run the amp in parallel that way each speaker will get 800 watts . Do not run the amp in bridged mode or you will fry either the amp or speakers or both. Do not daisy chain the speakers.

Run a cable from each channel of the amp to a speaker. That will max you out. Don't chain them (all that means is running in series...into one speaker, then out of that speaker into the other....but don't do that in this case). For Ipod music at frat parties, you should be kickin pretty good. Just don't over do it. Maybe get a "designated mixer" who stays sober enough to not blow your stuff up. ;)

Almost! Daisy-chaining as you describe it is actually a parallel connection, not series. That means connecting the speakers in this way will create a 2 ohms load.... which is fine only if your amp can handle a 2 ohm load... which this amp can't so don't do it.

What type of cables are you using to connect the amp to the speakers? Make sure they're speaker cables. What type of cables connect the mixer to the amp?

You might benefit from a stereo 15band e.q. between the mixer and the amp.

How are you connecting the ipod to the mixer and which input are you using?
Are you using the headphone output? It may not put out enough signal to the mixer.

We use Tim's iPhone to pump break tunes through our PA rig but use subs to cover the low-end. From the description of your gear, I wouldn't boost any lows that I hear in some of the techno-funk canned tracks. Chicks dig 'em and we love to watch them dance but they'll toast your drivers if pushed past reasonable limits. "....everybody Charlie Brown..."....just what the heck does that mean, anyway?
