Big Muff PI deluxe

Hi friends,
recently i was thinking about buying deluxe big muff from EHX. I never had a fuzz pedal before, so my question can be a little bit "lame".
Can i use that deluxe big muff as always on drive/distortion for the mid/treble part of my bass signal since it has that lpf/hpf thing? I mean not full-blast-amp-gain-set-to-11-distortion, but something like Geddy or i dont know, i hope you know what i mean :D

For me, the low passed sound is just not that pleasing. I don't know what the pedal does, but it seems more than simply low pass.

Better to just split the signal and use the pedal of choice up top if you really want that separation.

I ended up shelving it and just finding more pleasing OD via my amp preamp and other pedals for when I want even more drive.

Yeah, it's sorta bordering on obsessive misplaced rage how much he hates this particular muff. Interesting too say the least. Either way, I had one and, for the price, it did a decent job. Gotta make sure to accent mids as this pedal tends to scoop the sound. The mix and noise gate option provided benefits I.M.H.O.

He's right though :)

It's astounding how the company that invented the Muff can't even make a Muff that sounds anything like a Muff now. The current EHX Muffs are just terrible, terrible sounding pedals.

I have to say I agree that there are people making better Muffs than EHX these days. Which is a real pity. I don't know why EHX doesn't make a vintage series that is to spec and issue a Green Russian, a Black, a Violet, etc.

If I were you, I would look at either Stomp under Foot or Wren and Cuff.

Roughly same price as the EHX stuff and I think it's much truer to the cause.

If you are shorter on cash, then the Vick Black Russian is a great way to go (I hear).

Hey bongo, I was anticipating your input! You are sorta like "Robin' to Bassmusic17's 'Batman' when it comes to this pedal. :D

That said, This is not the best Muff out there but it has it's uses. Please note that Tony Levin has the EHX BBMD on one of his boards. Just saw a pic on a thread here on TB. I was able to get a very useable tone. Only reason still not on my board is that I decided to go in a different direction with my muff sound and the Malekko Diabolik was the sonic choice! Either way, this pedal gets painted as the worst P.O.S. and that is a bunch of phooey (I.M.H.O.).

I agree with this. Too much real-estate used considering what it generates. That said, I don't despise it with emphatic vigour expressed by a select few. :D

I leave mine set pretty much the same all the time. It gets kicked on for the 5 or so songs I need it for, and kicked off the rest of the time. Some of the time, I'll play with the blend knob and try it on different parts of different songs, but I've only found a few that I like to do that for. And I only do that if the wind moves me.

But, I'm only competing for sonic space with one guitar, and he sings as well.

I just bought a Big Muff Deluxe.
I've had a bit of a play with it and I'm going in circles trying to get a sound I like here at home. There just seems too much scope for adjustment!

Does anyone have any tips for setting one of these things up?
eg. Do you establish your fuzz sound first then adjust the blend to gain the bottom end back?
......or do you do something else?
Do most people make use of the crossover? (I see some like it and others don't. I'm undecided.)

I'm anticipating having to tweak settings at rehearsal/gigs of course, but for now I'm just chasing a sound here at home.

I've (for the moment) settled on running my bass straight into my [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] to get a nice, warm overdriven tone, then into the Big Muff for a click in/out (as required) fuzz effect where needed, through my Zoom MS60-B for compression and speaker simulation, then into my amp. Your thoughts?

If youre on a budget, like Mos said, I would totally go with the Vick Black Russian. I, at the moment, have 4 muff variants, BIg Games both versions of his Green Russian, the Vick and the Pharaoh Supreme. Two on my main board. I figured that was enough. But then I played my Vick BRM last night and I feel I really need to find a place for that pedal in my main arsenal. Its simple, to the point and sounds and plays very very good. What a great muff. And I thinks its only $110 new. Plus, it has a 3 way toggle for mids and is in a small enclousre. You really cant beat it IMO.

If you want a "geddy" like tone, I would highly recommend some kind of Sansamp (either just the BDDI or the Vintage one) but I bet any preamp pedal that adds drive would be beneficial. For my Sansamp, drive knob at 12 o clock and Presence at around 2 o Clock gets me a sweet Geddy/Chris Squire tone out of any amp I play through.
