Big Splits vs Fat Stacks: Who's tried both? Or either?

Yep. Sure has.

Because of that, I decided that I should just stop asking and start doing, so I bought the Big Splits from Bestbassgear.
(Well, actually, sold a bass, got some money to use)
They should arrive same day or earlier than the bass.

Full report to come Weds or Thurs, in the NBD thread I'll likely start.

Looking forward to your review rojo. You won't regret it. Matter of fact you'll be looking for future basses with the BS's sized route to mod.

Maurilio are the ohms the same on the Big Singles and Big Splits?

In regard to the Big Singles, is there a neck and a bridge ohm version? I didn't happen to notice any markings on the back of mine.

yes there are a difference in ohm (different design).

Neck and bridge are different. Beside the winding, neck and bridge have a different pole piece spacing.

I think it would be much better if the webpage had the pickup sound sample, since it's really popular. I may not be the first who had this idea but just a thought.
Anyway, which Nord preamp would be the best if I want to have DC5 pickup which I can switch parallel/single? I'm thinking to get 2b-4c but bestbassgear still don't have 'em.

sound samples are a relative thing... depending on the instrument, the player's technique etc, each pickup will sound different (but I understand still it will give some sort of "direction").

There are only two preamps, 2 and 3 band. Flat they are identical.
2b-4c and all the rest of the different variable are only the type of the prewired configurations.

What is the difference in ohms of a Big Single bridge/neck and a Big Split bridge/neck?

I'm not in the shop today, sorry, I don't have data with me.

There is no connection/correlation between the two design (meaning, ohms don't say much about a pup)

If you need these info you'll better off calling the shop :)

I just got the bass together and I'll tell ya...
The difference between the Barts and these is like the difference between getting slapped in the face by a 7 year old girl and being punched in the face by Mike Tyson.
It's a noticeable difference.

I'm quite impressed and can't wait for a better run with a drummer (practice is tonight).

I will say, these also made me realize the importance of strings, as well. The current ones aren't old... they just blow! And while I was blaming the Barts primarily for that, it was abundantly clear once I swapped the pickups that these strings can't hold a candle to the Ken Smith strings I've used for years.
But that's a topic for another thread.

FatStacks or Big Splits..which to go with?

I know folks have said the FatStacks are lower output, but lower compared to what? Compared to, let's say..a MusicMan humbucker?

Let me ask it this way...Splits are higher output, how much higher than a regular single coil? Would the Splits + the OBP-3 be TOO much? The OBP-3 is already has very sensitive controls, would it work better with the lower output pickups?

As a point of reference, my Spector has an EMG MMTW with the OBP-3, I'd like to match the output level of that, to make swapping back and fourth seamless.

Two things from my experience with the Fat Stacks:

You have the option of coil tapping, getting a very nice single coil sound. This will be a few db louder, great for a small solo boost.

Running the Fat Stacks passive works very well. I don't understand why people make a big thing of its output, your amp has input gain. Use it.

Bongo,

Rojo installed the Big Splits and after talking with him, he LOVED the tone of the pickups with the Aggie preamp but they were a bit much in output. He said if he goes that route again, he'll go with the fatstacks instead.

A friend of mine has the Fat Stacks and the OBP2 preamp and it is by no means quiet. I would say it's got a normal output. Great tone, I really dig those pickups as well.

I'm so torn! Problem is, one person's high output is another persons sweet spot! Splits may be high output compared to something like a Fender, but are they high output compared to my Spector which sounds like a freight train plowing through a tornado?

Let me ask this maybe more universal comparison...how does the output of Splits/Stacks compare to G&L MFD pickups? I'm very familiar with those and love the output they produce.
