black & blond P makeover (etc)

First off, used a flat blade to shave the binding material level to the bodies' side. I use an Olfa utility knife w/snap-blades as the blades are sharp and stiff but can also be flexed slightly. I use a curved file for the inner elbows. Important to maintain the width of the binding material on top. It got a bit narrow in a spot of two, but should be able to make it work visually by subtle detail tapering/adjusting.

Then, I filed the gap w/bondo to achieve a flat face/top.

Jio...Have you considered a Trans Black top instead of Piano Black.

I'm liking that grain.

It's crossed my mind - I thought about opaque black halo to trans-black in the interior, but due to the big pg, there really wouldn't be much showing. The back will show the
grain like it was before, so I'm liking the contrast of shiny rich black on the front.

and as I said before, killer bass. I tend to favor the feel of a Fender over a modern day G&L, but prefer the tone of an L-series over a Fender. your modified '51RI bridges the gap perfectly and is a bass I'd love to own, only left-handed. perhaps some day I'll have to do this.

I have a tracing of it which could easily be flipped over...

tracing of the PG right? cool. another question, for the pickups, are they normal spacing or is the neck p/u move closer to the neck or bridge p/u moved closer to the bridge?

Both for the pg and for the body pu & control cavity rout locations - pu's are as close to L-2000 specs/location as I could. I didn't have a 70's Tele bass pg to trace so designed mine for this set-up specifically from pics.

And it's in the mail to Marty… to repost, this is what I requested - piano-black front, (with blk/wht/blk pg & cream binding), and transparent leather brown side/back. In fact, just like the inside suede of the strap matches the colour of the back wood. (most likely mahogany) I have a strap like that and tried to match that exact colour in my 1st attempt at a re-finish.

How's the things going? :D

Meanwhile, if you want to post your black & blond basses (black body/maple neck) here that would be cool. .

Not mine as usual .. (why it has to be the word of 'your' in every ask for pic in your nice threads? LOL) from reverb. com some times ago..

Tele 78

No word back from Marty yet, but I told him no rush.

This Tele is very cool and close to what mine w/look like (badass!) - thanks for finding/posting. It's got the curved Telecaster Bass decal that I like so much. Now I'm inspired to refinish my hs face to emulate this example (I think I have one of those decals) No bullet truss though… I also dig how someone modded it by putting in both a P and a J pu - probably sounds awesome! The originals w/only the neck-hugging bucker were tonally (but not totally) limited.

What do you think? At this point, I'm not attempting to make this into a 70's Telecaster bass - I've just always liked this incarnation of Fender decal/branding. (actual late 70's necks had the bullet truss-rod) Since it's sitting here off the bass, it would be a good time to do it - but I guess I could go either way. I would lose the "made in usa" and the bogus serial # since it was orig CIJ in '06. hummm….
