'Black headed' Tobias basses

Hello you all,
I recently bought a second Tobias with a black headstock. They are both quite early build during the Gibson-era, (serial 2878 and 3261). Both are very leightweight swamp-ash bodies, the 5 string weighs only 3.1kg. The 4 string has 2 single coil bartolini's with a tiger maple top. Can anyone tell me if there's a link between the swamp ash, the early serial numbers and the black headstock ? The basses are both fantastic players with the cleanest sound i have heard.
