Blackstar Unity 700 Head

I’ve spent a week with the new bass amp from Blackstar and with a little sadness I have to honestly admit that the U700 sounds better than my GK and will be replacing it. There’s not a lot of really good information about the amp online yet but I’m happy that I took the risk and ordered it from my guy Matt Kreager at Sweetwater because I was able to get some killer sounds out of the amp within minutes of opening the box. The preamp section has a 3 position toggle that lets you choose between “Classic, Modern and Flat” and it also has another 3 position toggle that changes the output response from “Linear, 6L6 and 6550” and with the EQ flat you can make a lot of tonal changes with those switches alone. It also has a really amazing overdrive section that is capable of being controlled via the 2 way included footswitch. It has a drive knob to control the amount and another 3 way toggle switch that gives you the option of choosing “OD” “Distortion” (Based on the same circuitry as the Darkglass B7K) and “Fuzz” (which of course is based on the Bigg Muff circuit). If that’s not enough it has a built-in onboard chorus and octave effects with adjustable parameter controls on the back of the amp and footswitchable control like the overdrive section. Lastly it has a compressor that is actually pretty good for being an onboard unit with only a single control knob.
Overall I have to give a lot of credit to Blackstar on their entry into the extremely competitive bass market because they have instantly become one of the front runners in the world of compact, powerful bass amps that are the majority of the bass amps now sold. I’m pretty confident in putting this amp “head to head” with anything else on the market for $599 U.S.!
I’m really getting a killer tone with the “Modern” and “6550” settings with a little midrange scoop, but I’m pretty sure you can get whatever you’re after with this amp pretty easily as it’s very intuitively designed and you get a lot out of very little adjustment from all of the adjustable parameters and the EQ seems to be voiced to stay in the sweet spot for bass. If you’re a fan of the Mesa amps it does that, if you’re a fan of the Darkglass amps it does that (and it has cab impulses and DAW connectivity for desktop recording), if you’re a tube amp kinda person you might be surprised how much it not only sounds like an expensive tube amp but also with the right settings how much it feels like you’re playing through warm tubes. I will get some audio clips posted soon when I’m able to spend a few minutes with Ableton.

Yes very interesting thanks for sharing thoughts. This amp looks very interesting. The few videos I’ve seen on it. Seems like it’s got potential for sure. I have GK as my main amp as well what did you find you preferred about the Blackstar ? What kind of bass / cab / other FX if any have you tried with it?
I’ve been using GK amps since the early 90’s and I’m always looking for that 800rb sound out of the box and I can get it with the Blackstar U700 almost instantly with a little midrange scoop. I’m currently using my Aguilar GS210 (4ohm 1000w 2x10”) and a Blackstar U250 1x15” (250w powered cab or it can be used as an 8ohm passive cab) which drops the impedance to its minimal operating load of 2.67ohms. I’m using my Sansamp RBI and usually run the XLR out to the powered 15” and the line out to the U700 so I can have a little more control of the levels of each cab with the XLR knob controlling the output from the 15” and the Level knob controlling the output of the U700 and the 2x10”. I’m liking the latter configuration so far. As to the reason I’m using the new Blackstar head to replace my GK 1001rb is two fold; the 1001rb has been discontinued and it’s not the most portable amp; the U700 gets me so close to the GK tones I doubt most people can tell the difference and the price point is just too good to pass up. I’m not using my pedalboard much but I have used it with a few effects and multi effects unit and the Blackstar is a really good platform for using effects in my opinion. I can’t say that the amp is transparent and the color is very similar to the GK but it seems to lend itself well to overdrive and I think the extra headroom has a lot to do with it. I’m playing my fifth gig with the new amp this weekend and I’m still as happy with my purchase and I’ll try to keep everyone interested posted on the U700 and I’ll try to answer any questions there may be.

Reviving an old thread here... with this Blackstar U700 amp, if I were to run both an 8ohm and 4ohm cab together at a 2.67ohm load, I should get the full 700 watts, am I right by my assumption?
