Blew my 12".....AGAIN!!!!!

Ok guys.... Checked both the ampeg 4x8, and the avatar b112 and they are both wired correctly. All drivers go out when tested. Alone, and in series.

I think the reason I like the sound of the avatar alone better than the pair in Byam or full range is that the avatar simply sounds better with the new LFC driver. As a full range cabinet I mean.
probably. Just to be thorough, it's all the same cables as before?

Sounds like this is indeed a case of mixed driver sizes not playing well together then.
Or possibly very different tuning alignments, which can be just as poor with the same sized driver (if this is indeed the case)

I think Basson made an SVT-style cab with car speakers in it. Here's the problem: the bass was, in fact, incredible. But the efficiency on those drivers is awful, to the point where Basson advertised a required minimum power rating of 1500 watts to drive the thing to stage volume.

You're obviously giving that poor woofer too much to do. I think another look at the entire rig layout and what you're trying to get done with it is in order. I've never used a sub with a bass guitar rig. However, I consider them indispensable for PA work.

Although it's now many years later... the BS1075's (the LF drivers in the Basson "Earthquake" cabinet) were used intentionally so that people would stop underpowering the hell out of this thing. Scare them into using the right power and getting the right tone. I supplied 5 of these cabinets into Canada, I have no idea where they've gone now. There were 3 with silver grilles and 2 with black, according to my records. From what I know, Tom Lee never sold the Earthquake. The 2x10" version that I used was enough to obliterate an SVT 8x10" cabinet volume wise, and killed it tonally. The SVT head sounded miles better through it but didn't have the jam to really drive it well. I used a QSC MX 2000 to demo the Earthquake, with a PB 1 preamp and my Ergodyne 5 string. I liked the QSC's because they stayed clean going into 4 ohms bridged. I drove the 2x10" with a MX 1500 just because I had one spare lol. They were / are heavy, as all the bass cabs were 1.5" thick MDF. (so were the 400 watt 4x12" guitar cabs).
They went low, they sounded like GOD in my opinion, and I'm sad they never got a foothold. It was like pulling teeth to even demo them in store, there were just too many lighter / cheaper cabs around. I will maintain until I'm gone that I've never heard better tone.. but power hungry they were for sure. My go to these days is Yorkville/Traynor, but I'm kind of a Canadiana guy in some ways lol. I do still have a pair of the PA cabinets that were a 15 and a horn... they're tough as hell.
I sold Basson. I never kept an Earthquake cabinet... even for me it was ridiculous. I've never played the US festival and probably never will play something that big lol.

Specs from my paperwork..
B810B 2,000W Bass Cabinet with 8x10 Speaker Specifications:
  • 8x10" BS1075 drivers with 200oz. magnet
  • 2000W RMS handling
  • 105dB max
  • -130dB
  • 4 ohms
  • 28Hz-5kHz frequency response
  • 26-1/4"W x 55"H x 18"D
  • 228 lbs.

Just seeing your gear and you have a Carvin BX1500 as an amp. It might be sending too much power for a humble 1x12. Funkhead's suggestion of an LF is probably the next route to go but if you are eqing quite aggressively in the bass end of the amp, that speaker may go up in smoke as well.
Especially if he's running in bridge mode!

They probably ended up in the landfill.

Just because a driver can consume 500W RMS of power without burning up doesn't mean all that power gets converted to moving air. Many of these high power drivers are more space heater than transducer, as they are very inefficient and much of the power goes towards heating the voice coil.

My horn loaded subs equipped with one Eminence Lab 15 will make 105db with one watt RMS input @ 1 meter.

It was the combo of the cab and drivers that worked. I was there, real world. Your theoretical is reasonable except that... I was there.

105 dB?? for 228 pounds.

That is pretty Awful. A 2x10 like that wouldn't touch a 810E lol

105 dB oh geez, come on. 810E is 100 dB at 1 watt. 105 dB would be about 3 to 5 watts
and your telling me a 210 with car stereo speakers was louder. I dont think so

now I understand why they went out of business
They weren't car stereo speakers. They're OEM by Eminence. Hell half of them were labeled as Pyle.. with "manufactured by Eminence" on the side... depending if you were in the Instrument or PA side of things.

Goodness, the tragedy of it all...
Well, it was pretty disappointing at the time, admittedly. That being said, I seem to have emotionally recovered LOL. I just mostly wanted to correct that the cabinets were NOT equipped with car stereo speakers. It's just inaccurate. They did rock. They WERE too heavy. That is probably the number one thing that killed them, along with the power requirements. But... Basson did do "low".
To the OP.. if you keep blowing up drivers, it's rarely the drivers' fault. Using it as your LF device maybe the problem.. personally I prefer getting into a 15" along WITH some 10's or 12's these days, but YMMV.

If all the drivers were series connected, maybe it would take a 2000W amp to get anything useful out of the cab.
Based on the given specs, a maximum spl of 105db and what I assume is supposed to be the sensitivity at -130db, I would be suspect of any other details in describing this box to be accurate, in any meaningful way.

2000W RMS divided up across 8 10" drivers looks like a big space heater, in my opinion.

If the cabinet is really rated at 105dB/1w/1M and rated at 2000 watts RMS, then ny the math, the maximum SPL should be ~105dB + 33dB = 138dB so the math doesn't match up either.

Yes; but I really doubt the direct radiating cabinet 105db@1W/m sensitivity to begin with, so everything else would be out the window.

The original poster is looking for drivers with a 100Khz bandwidth, so I don't think even this megalith of a cabinet would be of much interest.:D

This Thread is from January 21, 2016 and OP himself has not been on TB @pb9717 was last seen:Jun 29, 2020.

Hope he got it figured out by now.

Maybe that is why they left this summer, not having closer on this thread. :nailbiting:
