So I've been looking at getting in a band. There are plenty of bands in the area I live in looking for Bassists. So I contact one that looks like a pretty fun gig. Harder music than I generally play, but would be fun to give it a try. Here's the conversation I had with the band leader about instruments.

Him: So what kind of bass do you play?

Me: I have two, my main has been a Fender Jazz, but I just got another.

Him: Fenders aren't good for hard rock.

Me: Are you joking?

Him: What's the other one?

Me: Music Man Bongo.

Him: A what?

Me: Bongo....

Him: That doesn't sound like its good for hard rock either.

Me: John Myung of Dream Theater plays one.

Him: Who?

Me: Alright man, I don't really think this is a good match. Thank you for your time.


Completely ridiculous. I would expect that kind of attitude from some youngsters, but this guy was in his 30's like me. I was pretty floored and pissed about it at the time. I just laugh at it now.

Well, people are closeminded. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You're already past it, so that's a good thing.

I recently got a regular country band gig starting in Tuesday. When I was talking to the drummer for the band for a sort of interview, one of the last things he asked me was if I played 4-string. Before I could answer he told me how he felt anything more was stupid and pointless. I shrugged it off and told him I only had a 4 and now I'm curious to meet him and the band to see how they play.

Just like anything more than a kick, a snare, 1 tom & a cymbal is stupid & pointless!

Only being concerned about what brand and look of the instrument you have is ridiculous. What a douche. Really shows his musical ignorance. Who cares what instrument of choice you play, it's about the player! :scowl:

Typical of most singers (that only sing...). More concerned with image and stage presence then sound and skill. He doesn't wish to make good music. He wants to take good poster and magazine cover pictures, and fit a style in some ******** video. Should've told knob to keep dreaming.

I totally want to forward that exchange to every major musician of the last, like, 50 years. If I had to choose one band, though, I would go Iron Maiden. When I think Fender, I think Iron Maiden. And Marcus Miller, and Duck Dunn, and Rob Trujillo, and Matt Freeman, and..................................
