Since many of us having been chatting about various preamps and the best operating levels for our piezos...I wanted to share something interesting (to me anyway).
I've been using an old Boss Bass EQ...I'd bet for over ten years now. For some reason, it always seemed to boost the right frequencies and allow me to cut the glacky sounding ones pretty easily (400, 500, & 800). Plus, the 15db of Gain is great for getting the most volume out of my bass amps.
So, my trusty old EQ is statring to get a little crusty sounding so I decided it was time to upgrade.
In the past few months I've tried several other pre's including the Fishman and LR Baggs acoustic DI and still didn't find what I wanted...cheap and small that is. (An Avalon or a Summit would be killer, but I can't afford one right now nor do I want to schlepp it or subject it the bar scene).
So, as I'm reading through the owners manual -- I was surprised to find the input is 1M Ohm! Who'd a thunk?
You can get one of these for around $79 and they're built like tanks.
These might be too "colored" for some of the purists...it's not exactly ruler flat sounding. But when the volume is pumping and you need your bass fat and strong in the mix...one of these little buggers might be worth a try.
