BOSS GT-1B OUTPUT SOCKET

The Boss GT-1B doesn’t have an XLR out socket, just a 1/4” Jack socket. The instruction manual states this can be used for direct connection to a mixing desk, however at church we just have XLR cables running from the stage to the connection box at the back.

I have tried using a Jack to XLR adaptor into the back of the GT-1B but the sound guy wasn’t happy with this arrangement for some reason? Am I doing something wrong here? Should I run a cable from the GT-1B into a DI box instead?

As one might expect from Boss, they’ve given the GT-1 processors a pretty consumer set of I/O and chosen stereo, unbalanced, tip-sleeve main 1/4” outputs. According to Boss’s manual, those outputs are expecting to see a pretty high input impedance in the next device — at least 10kOhms. A simple adapter that just lets you plug that into a low-impedance XLR input might yield a lot of noise and/or a skewed frequency response.

Unfortunately I don’t know what the best or most cost-effective solution would be, maybe a DI or transformer box from a company like Radial Engineering, to buffer the output of the Boss and give you a balanced output that can drive a low-impedance balanced XLR input. It’s probably better to have a short instrument cable with 1/4” plugs going from the Boss to the DI product, and the longer cable going from there to the mixing desk.

On the Boss GT-1B from the menu settings you select whatever device you are connecting to, whether it be an amp, headphones or recording device (mixer etc). I assumed if you select recording device it will automatically set the correct signal level/impedance for the 1/4” out socket?

This part? I think the first option is still going to be single-ended and high impedance.

Yes, that’s the one.

As I said, if you select the LINE/PHONES option then you would have though that would be suitable for sending directly to the desk as that it was it is intended for?

If you have an XLR cable running to the mixing desk, the input it’s connected to on the mixer is going to be expecting a balanced, low-impedance signal, and the Boss isn’t going to be delivering that without some help. The Boss is set up to run into an high-impedance single-ended line input, also found on many mixers and recording interfaces. If the FOH guy is giving you an XLR cable, you should make every effort to use that before trying to use a 1/4” input on the desk.

Are the L and R outputs TRS or TS? So if they're not TRS, we'll need to use a DI box to connect to the mixing desk? And is it possible to connect the L output to the bass amp and the R output to the desk? Each output will need to be set differently, i.e. the L output to the amp will presumably have to have preamp and speaker can sim off, as the bass amp already has this, but the output to the desk will need preamp and speak cab sim on. Is it possible to assign the outputs on the Boss GT-1B like this?
