Boss TU-2 Tuner - good value, or are there better for the money?

I have Planet Waves PW-CT-04 and it can hear my open B string. The TU-2 cannot so you have to fret the harmonic. Other than that TU-2 is a great tuner for "floor". Also the display on the PW tuner is much larger and easier to read than the TU-2. Cannot comment on the others.

Korg tuners in general, +1.

I haven't used the Pitch Black, but I have tried the Boss - it wouldn't track a B string worth anything, IME. All of the Korg tuners I've used have been great. You have to get to the high buck stuff before you get to their performance level, again IME.

Korg Pitch Black. Cheaper, faster, simpler, easier to read, more accurate and true bypass. Looks cooler too.

This far and only one mention of the Turbo Tuner? It is, to date, the best tuner I've ever used, in every respect. Construction, bypass, accuracy, visibility and tracking are better than the TU-2 AND the Pitchblack, the latter of which only has the upper hand in total area consumed.

There are too many tuner threads around here.

Got mine for 50 bucks. If I had the $$ to spend I would prefer a turbo tuner.

As far as the accuracy goes,...how many steps out of tune is +/- 3 cent? A whole step? A half step?

In case this hasn't been answered, I believe 100 cents is a half step. I worry less about that spec than most because the string is imperfect and what the tuner sees over time is dynamic (a hard pluck with a large string amplitude will be sharp and flatten as it decays).

I worry more about what it can latch on to (e.g. Low B) and how quickly it can do it.

I'm mostly playing guitar oriented rock, blues, and horn band R&B. I don't need studio strobophonic accuracy especially if it means paying $200 and/or something fragile. I need something that's fast, ultra durable, doesn't take a lot of room (or power), is easy to read in ANY conditions (including full daylight outdoors), and doesn't color or weaken my tone.

The TurboTuner sounds intriguing... tho' about twice as much as I really wanted to spend.

I have had my TU 2 for like 10 years. No issues. Seems like everyother year or so there is a must have tuner that comes out like the Planet Waves, or PB, or the Peterson, but until it dies, the Boss is staying.

Besides, all my pedals are true bypass, and the TU2 is the only buffered pedal on my board, so I use it to buffer my signal before it hits the amp.

I've been in love with my TU-2 for over 10 years now (if i'm counting right) I've had one or two go missing over the years and have tried cheaper replacements and there is just something about them that makes them better.

I like the form factor - Boss does that right with all their boxes and I think that combined with it's indestructible build is worththe premium price.

It takes me no time to tune up the six string and it finds the low b no problem contrary to what i've heard other say about it. It can also power your other pedals with is super handy.

The only other tuner I would consider is the peterson strobo stomp. I love strobe tuners and the stomp is all that and some, even has a DI box built in that is really handy. Not a big fan of the form factor and size, but that and the TU-2 are the only tuners I would ever recommend ( for an effect pedal tuner)

The Ibanez LU20 is definitely the best value out there right now. 40 bucks, true bypass, +/- 1 cent accuracy, tunes the low B perfectly.

Stomps all over the Tu-2 and is comparable to the pitchblack at less than half the price.

Rpsands -

Is the case on that Ibanez unit made of metal or plastic? Can't tell from the pic...

And, is it backlit? Again, hard to tell from the pic and looks like it might be a bit hard to read if it's not.

Thanks.

Its metal and quite heavy. I don't find it hard to read in the dark or a lit room, and I had no issues reading it on in the TV studio last week (with a super bright overhead light).

The only bad thing about it is that it's fairly wide to accommodate the strobe setup.

you guys saying the TU-2 can't track low b are crazy.. If I remember to bring my camera to practice next time...

+1 I have a 5 String J, the TU2 tracks my B string just fine, every time.

I know from experience both the Korg & the Boss are more than accurate enough for Rock stage tuners. Just get whichever one you can get a better deal on and get on with your rockin' self :bassist:...

To the mod:

OP of this thread, here. Since another thread has started up covering the exact same subject, feel free to close this one out. I've gotten enough info to know which options to check out further.

Thanks again everyone!
