Double Bass Bow Rehair in Northern VA??

Hi everybody,
I am looking for a shop in the Northern VA/ Washington D.C. area to do a rehair for my sons bass bow. anybody know a shop in that area?

You can't go wrong with Potters, lots of my friends go there.

I live in Northern Virginia, but I send my bow to Sue Lipkens. Best rehair on the planet. If I FedEx it on Monday, I usualy have it back by Friday. (I always check via email to see if she has time.)

I take my bow to Donald Cohen in Alexandria. Very nice guy who does excellent work, He rehairs many of the National Symphony guy's bows.

I've heard very good things about Don Cohen. My private teacher (a member of the Richmond Symphony) uses his hair. I spoke to him a few months ago about having my bow repaired and he was very nice and helpful.

I've had Cohen rehair my bow a bunch of times, and although his workmanship is impeccable, he uses hair which requires another rehair within 3-4 months. It just dries out; won't hold rosin. I've talked with colleagues about this, and they agree.

I had Brobst (also Alexandria VA) rehair my bow last month, and the difference is startling. Brobst told me they use Chinese or Mongolian hair, and Cohen said he uses South American or Canadian hair. For me, it's a huge difference, and I'm quite happy with the rehair job Brobst did. It hasn't been too long, but the difference between the initial response of the hair was extremely noticeable. I plan to go back to Brobst next time (also they charge $50 vs. Cohen's $72.50).

Same here. I don't mean this as criticism of anyone else, but after having gotten rehairs from people all over the country for over forty years, I would say that the worst rehair Sue Lipkins has ever done for me is MILES better than the best rehair I've ever gotten from anyone else. And with Sue's work, I can always go a year or more between rehairing.

She charges a few bucks more than some other people, and you do have to ship, but IMHO it's well worth it. Your bow is half your sound -- you need the best rehair you can get.
