Hey guys,
Names Patrick a middle aged late starter who just got his first Bass @ 34. I am an over achieving, OCD driven jack of all trades. Looks like the new trade for me is Bass.
Kinda upset that I am starting so late, since I have ALWAYS had music be a huge part of my life, and I can't express how much more so I tie in with music now that I can play it and not just listen to it. So chances are for a guy like me with a full family, a full time job, and not much time that I wont ever get out there and go "gigging" but at least having the ability to play for myself is better than not at all.
I tend to jump into things with a ton of enthusiasm and master them quickly (But can tell Bass is going to be one thing that wont come so fast). I own a my little IT/Computer company and work for the government in IT, and I am a partner of a self reliance company with some friends where we practice and train/teach things to do with survival, combat, situational awareness, cyber security, etc. Not just the cool stuff like guns, knives and MMA but even something like how to land a job or balance a checkbook might be something we do because its part of "self reliance" each of my "brothers" brings a little something different to the table. I am our computer & gun guy (soon to be music guy).
As a former Marine I am pretty jacked up, bad knee, bad back (ok really bad back) so a lot of my old hobbies are taken from me like mountain bike riding, or running with my dog. I needed a new hobby that was not just video games or watching TV to keep my engaged and give me a skill that actually amounts to something. I got a guitar for christmas this last year and played with it for a while, but it just was not quite for me, I find myself always listening to the bottom end, the bass is key. I can never own a home audio system or a car audio system without putting subwoofers in there right away because music without bass to me is just naked and empty.
After messing around with a bass, I just dropped guitar completely and fell in love. I love how primal it feels to wield a larger instrument with thick strings and to play with my fingers instead of a pick. Not sexist or anything but it just feels more "manly" to me.
I hunted down a semi cheap bass on Craigslist after figuring out what I wanted (35" scale & 5 string) so brought home a BC Rich WMD Widow and god that thing is sick! Love the feel and tone. Hate how hard it is to stand up and play due to the strap location on the horn.
Anyways as this is already becoming a pretty long intro, just joining you guys here because I can tell this is a valuable resource for information and questions.
I look forward to your support, encouragement, and even your criticisms as I venture down the path of a new bass player.
