Brand new string snapped, help needed...

Hey guys,

I've had a freak accident, which was a combination of inexperience, false expectations and distraction and I've managed to snap a brand new Elixir .065 D string by overtuning it. It was the first time buying these strings because they are very expensive here and I managed to screw it up, so I felt horrible.

At the moment I have my old D string on, but there's a difference in loudness, character etc. It's not pronounced that much while playing fingerstyle, but slapping and popping is very much different and it's very disheartening to play RHCP songs I'm practicing.

So after the disaster happened, I wrote to Elixir's customer support, simply asking them to help me buy a single string from them, because I've looked at every single dealer they have on their website and nobody has them in stock.

I got the automated message that they received the mail on Wednesday, but nothing since and I really want to resolve this, since it's diminishing my desire to play a bit, since I only have one bass. I'm not saying they won't respond, but I don't want to wait wtihout asking elsewhere as well.

So do you guys have any advice, know where I should look or whatever? This is really bumming me out.

Thanks, it's not that I can't afford a new set, it's just the worst possible solution, at least for me. I have 4 brand new strings that sound great, and if I buy a new set, I'll have 4 brand new strings sitting in the package without a D for later on, so it's back to square one.

I've made the thread mostly to get a pointer where to look for a single string, besides Elixir directly, because maybe someone had a similar experience.

If I'm unable to get a single string, I'll simply tough it out and play these strings for a year, then get a new set and replace them all.

Hey Michael, sorry that I didn't give detailed information, it's Nanoweb Nickel plated steel. "Here" is Serbia. The price is not that different than in the rest of the world, but the purchasing power is about 5-6 times less than in the US.

Thanks Geri, I am unfamiliar in the procedure, how can I place an order for a single string? I'll see what happens when Elixir support team answers, if they answer at all. I'm sure they can help me out if it's not too much of a hassle.

UPDATE: Issue is resolved, I ordered the string from the Greek site HaphAsSard linked, 13.50 euros is the price I'll pay for my stupidity (shippment included) - not bad!

There's often costs involved in schooling yourself. There's one.

I did that a few times (Rotosounds, and in the 70's, there were no singles out there). After that, I 've never bought an electronic without it having a built-in pitch generator, so I could match it to get me in the ball park. Alternately, you can change one string at a time, tuning each new one by the other three.

This has probably happened to all of us.

I'm glad you got your problem sorted. When I was an absolute newbie last century I managed to break 3 E strings before I realised that I was trying to tune them an octave too high. Stuffed if I know how the remaining strings survived.
