Beach Boys Founder Brian Wilson Has Dementia, Court Filings Confirm

While I tend to not think of him as a bassist necessarily, but as an all-around auteur and composer(and then of course he encouraged Carol Kaye to add her contributions), he, like his counterpart Paul McCartney, put the bass out front and center in the early days of the Beach Boys. In spite of many pitfalls in his life that would have killed others, he managed to survive this far, but with this development right on the heels of his wife’s passing, it is still so sad.

Considering the terrible care and abuse and drugs he endured, it was an absolute miracle he had mostly survived and been back for the last 20-odd years, though in interviews you could hear the glitches in his speaking and recall.

A coworker just had to put his mom in a memory care home this week. Such a sucky way to end a valuable and worthwhile life. I feel for Brian Wilson and his family. I don’t wish that on anybody.

I'm frankly surprised that some of the guys who started way back then are still performing at a high level, like McCartney, Clapton, Ringo, John Mayall, etc. But, Brian had problems early on, refusing to tour, reclusive, and all the rest. Father Time catches up to us all, eventually. What a great body of work that still sounds good today.

I love his music and his innovative approach to production. I still listen to his songs and wonder how someone could create such wonderful offerings. A very, very special person.

So sad, indeed.
With all he'd been through, many thought Brian would be the first Wilson brother to pass, so it's amazing he's outlived Dennis who's been gone since '83, and Carl who's been gone since '98. His contributions to pop music are unbelievable.

Great point. I believe The Beach Boys may have been the first group to write, produce and perform their own music.

What a horrible disease. Our mother had it but it was very late in her life.. right around 93 y/o. We now are dealing with a 63 y/o family member who was just diagnosed with this disease. She went from workaholic to needing assistance with pretty much everything she does.

Me too. A doctor friend said fentanyl is a quick out; another friend recommended pure heroin. Trouble is I’ve led such a sheltered life I have no idea how I’d get any. Just to be kept “against the day”. Thing is, when you hit your 70s the threat of a long horrible out comes to mind from time to time.
