I took off the knobs. Once they were off the board came out easily. My problem is that the max1044 chip appears to be soldered, as opposed to housed in a socket, to the board. Way beyond my soldering skills.

Broken Effects Pedal / help please

If you've got a RadioShack they have a desoldering pump (albeit $10 more dollars than they are online, but if you need it ASAP...). It is blue/ black in color. You click it down, heat up solder with your iron and quickly put the pump over the melted solder and press a button and it sucks it right up. If you think that is beyond your skill definitely take it to a tech. They would be able to replace the chip in no time.
I have one of those. I may be able to desolder but soldering the thing back on....I would probably blow something up.
I think I need to find a tech. :-/ Probably cost more than the pedal.

The easiest way to remove a dead IC is to use small cutters to clip each pin right at the body of the chip. Then you can heat up and pull each pin individually and clean the holes with a solder sucker. An IC can be replaced in a couple minutes with this technique.

As in, how to solder it? You're probably best finding a tech to do this. It's 10 minutes of labor and a 2 dollar part, so it shouldn't be too expensive.
Aight. ONly play I know in N.VA is Springfield Audio and they charge a bench fee and per the hour. I could just buy a new pedal.

If you have some confidence soldering, you could remove the old chip in the manner Spencer described, then buy a socket and a new chip. Solder in the socket, then plug the chip in. (remember to have the orientation correct)

If you don't feel like buying a solder pump, you can use solder braid too, like this:
