Broken Wrist

I fell down a small flight of stairs at work the other night and broke the scafoid bone in my right wrist. I'm sure there are brothers and sisters here on Talkbass who have been through a similar situation.

Can anybody fill me in on what I'm in for recovery wise?

Every break is different but it'll be 6 weeks until you can play unrestricted +/-. Your Dr. can advise you on playing in the meantime. I played through the pain after breaking my right hand. But I don't recommend that. Good luck.

Luckily its your picking hand so you wont have a lot of troubles. What may be limited in your ability to twist your wrist. Do whatever recovery exercises your doc may give you to get your wrist back into shape after you get your cast off.

I broke my left wrist as a kid, now i feel a little bit of strain when twisting my wrist to fret notes, especially on the low end of the neck. You wont' have to deal with that though :)

Due to your age take time and let it heal.
As we age we have areas that are more open to damage due to wear and tear from life.
Joints are vulnerable areas, no getting past that, so remember that your body is not reparing damage as fast, or as well as it used to so it may take five times longer for you to heal than someone half your age.

Personally i would get it checked out thoroughly to make sure your over all health is in good condition, and not a case of weak joints, or even an old injury come back and developed in to more that it should have been.:)

I posted this once before. I hope that it helps.

Some advice from someone who servery broke and dislocated his left wrist to the point that if it had not been treated correctly I would not be playing now. I was 49 when I broke wrist and I'm 50 now.

I am still recovering after working with a world renown hand and wrist surgeon.

1. DO NOT try to use the bone for 6 weeks!!!
It takes 6 weeks for the bone to heal after surgery and that is a fact for every human.

2. You will not lose your mental/physical ability to play the bass!
It will take time for your muscles to recover, but they will recover after the splints and cast are removed.

3. 6 weeks will pass quicker that you think.
I am sure that you have gone more that 8 weeks without playing in the past. The difference this time is that you have no choice in the matter if you want to heal properly.

I am sure my current situation and recovery would be better if another musician sat me down and gave me a good talking to about these three items.

I do know how you feel, my wrist was broken on Christmas eve 2012.

This will pass.

Saw the surgeon today, he says it's a clean break with little displacement, so gave me a cast and will see me again in a four weeks, at that point if things look good he figures at least four more weeks in cast or surgery if healing is not looking good.

In the meantime I was supposed to start a new job in a week, but that's now not an option. So I'll be unemployed through this.
