GFS pickups are almost embarrassingly good for the price. And there's advantage to their Kwikplug system if you've got adequate depth in your rout.

Budget P Bass pickups that are decent?

This is a really fun pickup, IMO you get the bigness / dynamics from the big pole, but dont lose the clarity/treble since the DCR is so low
that said, I think the big poles also require you to use a different pickup cover since the import size is bigger than what fender uses

This 100% and same for their jazz bass pickup set that is also very good for the price.
I got these and they work great, very punchy and decent amount of bass, a tad better than the original pickups of your bass :

Just in case it wasn't mentioned, mind that the stock pickup of the Sonic series is just a bit larger than the standard P-bass pickup. Not a problem installing a standard size P-pickup in the body, but there will be about 1 mm gap between the PU and the pickguard, that looks kinda ugly. If you want everything to look nice and neat, you'll have to change the pickguard to a standard P-bass guard as well.
I've been pretty happy with my Dragonfire Pbass pickups ..$45 is / was a good gamble...

Would you know if the Classic P on the Tonerider website is the same, but a different name for what is called the Tonerider Precision Plus TRP1? I don't see TRP1 on the Tonerider website, just the Classic P

Agreed. Don't spend a lot of money on a bass you are going to sell ($40 max).
The Tonerider TRP-1 are good spend. Since it already discontinued and replace by Classic P model , try check with the store which still has NOS.
You have to be aware that Tonerider Classic P or TRP-1 will bring you in doubt: they sound so good that you won't sell the bass. 
Pop the plastic shells off the replacement pickup and use the ones from the Sonic pickup.
I have a Sonic Series Squier P bass. I haven't gigged with it, but testing at home vs a few other P-basses, the pickup doesn't seem bad at all.
The stock pickup is not bad - I just modded the bass with an EMG Geezer and it was awesome but I'm switching to short scale due to some elbow issues so I put the Geezer in a Bronco bass and now want to sell the P bass and no longer have the stock pickup :>(
