Build thread: fEARful 15 sub

At the risk of jinxing myself, I'm starting this thread now that the parts for my fEARful 15 sub have been shipped. I've never built a speaker cabinet of any kind before, so this could get ugly. According to UPS everything is supposed to be delivered on Friday.

My first question is about clamps. Right now I only have one 18" clamp. I'm thinking I should probably pick up one or two of those right angle things that make it easy to clamp corner pieces together. How many more clamps will I need though?

Also, does anyone know how to register for the greenboy forum? I don't see any registration link over there.

Do a search on Greenboy for an answer on the forum. I just saw it the other day. Short answer is that they are not taking new members, but if you write a nice note to the admin, they may let you in.

If you're planning on building more stuff then you want a pair of clamps to reach across the longest side and a short pair. Or do it all with screws, that means a bit more work filling holes but you aren't invested in a pile of clamps.

Look in your area for a Maker Space, or Maker Hub, you pay a membership fee but then you get access to a shop with things like clamps you can use. And usually a bunch of nice folks hanging around to help with things. Membership fees are usually reasonable.

I'm dry fitting everything and came across my first question. Am I supposed to make some sort of shim to attach these brackets to the baffle so they can hold the grille on?

I didn't order screws for the grille

I suppose I still have a while before I need to worry about the grill anyway.

Later today I'll go pick up some clamps and hopefully start putting this together for real (the dry fitting is going fine so far).

Starting with the port divider. There's no biscuit cuts or anything so I did my best with measuring and the pocket screws.

PL glue kinda smells like peanut butter.

Lots of clamps will help.
Corner clamps too.

With the port divider feeling solid I moved on to the first of the side walls. Picked up a couple corner clamps to ensure everything is square. I haven't used screws on this side. My understanding is screws only serve to hold things in place while the PL cures and then most people remove them. I feel like the clamps are holding things steady enough that I can hopefully get by without screws. That will slow down the process though because I'm going to leave this untouched until tomorrow morning when the PL cures. Does anyone think I'm screwing the pooch by doing it this way?

No, it's fine. It's just a bit slower, but plenty have folks have done it that way. At least that's my understanding.

I can so relate to you. I’m handy with most things but not so much with carpentry type stuff.

I’ve been hoping someone like you would come along and do this so maybe I can get encouraged enough to try the same. It seems kind of over my head to me but I’d love me one of those fEARful cabs.

If I pull this off, it will be conclusive proof that anyone can build one of these.

There's not much carpentry involved in assembling the CNC kitsets. The joker in the thread I linked above got a dud kit and still put it together without too much extra work. He could have asked for the correct replacements to put him back on track.

Are you aware that the sub is not intended to be a stand alone cabinet?
If you put that under a 15/6/1 or 12/6/1 fEARful you'll increase the thunder and gain a ton of clarity.
