Both the 4001 and 4003 are neck through design. The main difference is in the truss rod. Read Joey's Rick Bass Guitar Maintenance page for very detailed info:
Joey's Rickenbacker Bass Guitar Maintenance, Setup and Wiring Diagrams
the 4001 is built on
It's called a "set neck".
Good luck and post pics here as you build.

He's building a 325 style, but I'm sure that building a 4001 or 3 will be similar. Also, be aware that Rickenbacker doesn't take kindly to copies.
The 4001 is also neckthrough. Listen to the guy above, the difference in the models was the truss rod. Also some older 4001s have a walnut stringer running the length of the body.
Planning on building a Ric for myself one of these days to replace the one I had many moons ago. I'd build a neck thru to be true to it.
iam also in the (beginning) process of building a neckthru rick
even if i find dimensions its hard for me to draw a guitar on something like autocad
i usually find a high-resolution picture taken from above, and calculate fret-fret and fret-nut dimensions using fret measurement calculating formulas. then i just draw and label the lengths onto the picture using paint. and then i have the picture printed where example: 12cm will really be 12cm and i have created all my templates like this
Hurry on down to your local Guitar Center and check them out. Maybe if you're lucky you might be able to make a drawing of the body and headstock. Or maybe if you're really lucky somebody who has a Ric here on TB could draw an outline of theirs for ya, with various measurements.
you can send me template of ric 4001/3?]
I have drawings for Ric bass. I can copy them and send to you. Send a private message if interested.
