I can honestly say that after 1 year playing bass, I wasn't very good and would not have tipped myself. It's not a charity so you gotta be enjoyable to listen to, at a minimum.
I have a friend who busked and traveled the world doing it, ended up in New Zealand where he stayed, then moved to Australia. He played acoustic guitar and harmonica. His main money-making tool was not the guitar or harp, but was instead a quick wit and an engaging, humorous personality. Knew a thousand jokes for any situation. Just like with women, make 'em laugh and you'll get where you want to go.
