I want a Toyota FJ Cruiser

my only advise is to listen to your dad and look for something with low miles. be greatful hes getting you something, I had to pay out my own pocket for my first car as well as the insurance/gas/repairs/etc

The original plan was that I would get my mom's old buick, and she would get a new car. That was about 2 years ago, and the economy took a dump. They have decided they'd rather buy me a used car, as both of their vehicles are holding up well, and a used car is a lot cheaper than a brand new one for themselves. I've talked to him about it, but he wants to hang on to it for a bit longer.

Don't let mileage scare you. 120,000 on a Chevy is nothing. My last Chevy 4x4 had 375,000 on the original engine when it finally went to the junkyard (rotten frame), and my Wife's 98 Z71 has 215,000 on it and we drive it every day.

So we're still looking, I am leaning towards a Silverado. My dad's has treated him very well We found a really nice truck at a dealership. Its an 01 Silverado 1500, extended cab, short bed. Its got the V8, and the z71 package, its in great shape, and overall its a mean truck. The problem- its $9800. Is it just me, or does that seem a bit pricey.

I looked on craigslist, and found a bunch of trucks nearly identical to it for half the price. My problem is that people on craigslist are damn near impossible to contact. I talked to one guy, and we were going to look at it today, but he never answered. Would you recommend buying a vehicle on craigslist? Or perhaps somewhere else I can find ads for vehicles for sale by owner?

As far as buying a cheap used car, my dad thinks dealers are a waste of time, and I have to agree. We went to one dealership, telling them upfront that we are not buying today, we just want to see what they have. Well, we ended up inside, taking down our billing information before we went out on the lot. I pointed out a nice Maxima I saw, and the next thing I know, I'm test driving it. It was 7 grand, and I was completely unimpressed. The power steering made a HUGE amount of noise, it was the first thing I noticed, and it didn't seem to be running very well. Thats a ton of money to spend for a car that obviously needs repairs. So I park the Maxima, and we get out to look around at more cars. Next thing we know, we're sitting in the office, trying to be convinced to buy the Maxima. This was the last straw, we got up and left. We were there over an hour, and I looked at one overpriced car that needed some probably costly repairs. I think we can get way more bang for our buck from a private seller.

$9800 for an 01? Better have 44" Super Swampers and 632 cubes under the hood for that much. Despite what kbb.com may value that truck at, nearly ten grand for a nine year old truck is insanity, imo.

The KBB actually is higher that what they are asking (dealership price). I can see going to a dealership for a new car (where else do you get one?) or a lightly used car, but for the price range we are looking at, you don't get much bang for your buck.

I wish people on craigslist weren't so impossible to get ahold of. I need some wheels, winter is coming soon.

My advice is, especially for the winters, get a 4x4. I drove a 04 dodge ram quad cab slt for a few years and there were multiple times that four wheel drive would have saved my butt. Nothing like having to call a tow truck to tow you out of the dumbest situations (parking in a yard, then it rains, or getting stuck in the snow). It's just not worth it. Luckily it's a buyer's market right now, and cash doesn't just talk, it yells.

My 98 Z71 was 7 years old when I bought it, and although It had over 100k on the clock I only paid $4000 for it. Deals are out there, you just need to look.

Good score on the Ram, btw.

In case anyone wonders/cares, I finally got some wheels. Its not a pickup, but I can live with that. My mom bought herself a pontiac G8 today, which means I get her car. Its a 1996 Buick Riviera, no complaints here, I like that car. It's an excellent first car: fully loaded, new radio, excellent mechanical condition (under 50k on the odometer), and its so damn comfortable to sit in. Its not a hotrod, but this thing hauls ass. Do you know what the best part about it is? Its MY car! ALL MINE!

If anyone cares enough to want some pictures, I can take some.

Go with a small SUV like an Explorer Sport. I absolutely love mine. The only downside is that you`ll probably end up transporting gear a lot of the time, but in return you can request a higher cut of gig money :p

*edit* I see now that you already got a car, so congrats!
