We all like new basses, but buying one a few years old the neck has had time to settle down or flip out. If the truss rod looks well used you know the neck is not very stable.
I buy new since I only play 21" scale acoustic bass ukes because of neck nerve damage. I have them modified by Eric's Guitar and painted by Pat Wilkins, both in Van Nuys, CA to make them more playable, plus they're all configured exactly the same with a new bridge, tuners and flatwound strings so that it doesn't matter which one I use.
