Make sure to search the classifieds and eBay, you'd be surprised you can find a really nice bass for a lot cheaper and maybe with some mods. I have a jazz myself and its my favorite of my basses. When buying second hand make sure to ask a lot of questions; how old, If it has tubes how long have they been in their, the condition of the amp etc. If you buy from eBay, buy from someone near a 100 percent rating and you will not have any problems whatsoever.

If you're going used, then buy something that is on the current market - parts and availability in Upsidedown Land are hard to come by and gonna be expensive to import.
Got a bass-buddy in ChCh, NZ and he cries at the prices and the long waits for parts.

The jazz bass is a good standard workhorse for lots of styles of music. I don't know what's available in Australia, but you can get a good Squier Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified jazz bass for less money than the Fender but usually just as good of a player. The thing that may or may not matter to you is tone: jazz is a little more "growly" and "trebly," while if you go with the other standard type, the precision, tone will be more "thumpy." That's a matter of personal choice, and both of them do have a lot of flexibility.
As far as amps go, I love my Ampeg, so nothing wrong there. But do be aware that Ampegs have a particular kind of sound; they are really strong in the low EQ range and have a good treble, but they don't produce so much mid-range. It's a great sort of pounding-old-school-rocknroll amp, but there are other settings it may not be as good for.
