Cab suggestions for GK Legacy 500 head, please

Hi, all.

I’m thinking about ditching my combo for a GK Legacy 500 head. I’m just not sure about a cab to go with it - some advice would be welcome!

I mostly play at home, so I’m not looking for huge volume, but I do want the classic GK growl which doesn’t seem to be available in very low power amps.

15” would be too muddy for me. I’d consider maybe 1x12” or 2x10” or similar.

The manual for the Legacy 500 says it delivers 190W at 8 ohms, and lots of the cabs I’ve been looking at are rated at much higher power.

Any thoughts?

A 15" isn't necessarily going to be muddy.
I have my Legacy 800 at home with a Mesa Boogie Subway 112. I can't turn it up past 9 o'clock without irritating the neighbors, so I don't get that growl at all. Mostly though I play through the headphone out on the amp. I do get that growl through phones and when I get a chance to crank it a bit at band practice. If you are just playing at home, you get really get any cabinet and likely be perfectly happy. I play mine mostly through the headphone out. You don't need to worry about the cabinet having a higher wattage that the amp. That's not a bad thing.

Just to drive home two points that @willsellout made:

1) 15's are not muddy if they are designed right. A 10" could be just as muddy. Speaker size has nothing to do with it.

2) Having a cab that handles more power than your amp is fine. You could use a 5000 watt cab if wanted to, as long as your amp produces something less than 5000 watts.

You may be better off keeping your combo and getting a Plex pedal for it.

All excellent advice above IMO. I would also suggest maybe looking at the GK Neo 112II as an option to consider It's a sweet cab, and GK with GK always sounds great to me. Plus, that cab would let you play out, at least in smaller venues. On top of that it's an excellent stage monitor when relying on FOH to deliver your sound to the audience in larger venues.
