Cabs for a LH500

Looking to get new cabs for my LH500.

Thinking of getting 2 4x10 cabs.

Play mostly rock, and some jamband.

What are my options here?

I was thinking about the Hydrives, my after reading around I fear of under powering. The 4x10s rate at 1000w, LH500 pushes 500w.

Should I worry about under powering? Seems to make some sense.

So with basically 250watts going to each 4x10. What would be my best option? Thinking maybe the Hartke 4.5xl.

What say you? Open to suggestions. And no mention of Peavey, as that is what I have now. And I am really over the sound of them.

I have played the LH1000 into a pair of 410's at Sam Ash and it was killer. The Hydrives blow away anything else Hartke's ever made. I think that stack would be just as killer with the LH500, just not as loud, but how loud do you need to be? I mean really!

I think two 4x10s is seriously over doing it and while the Hydrive stuff sounds nice, it's way too heavy and way too much money for what it is IMHO.

If you've got a 1200.00 budget, well, that's huge, and you can do a lot better.

I'd consider:
-A pair of GK Neo 212s or 410s
-A Genz Neox212T
-A pair of custom fEarful 12/6's from Low Down Sound (see the wiki)
-A pair of Schroeder 15+L's

Just no sense buying super heavy crap anymore unless it's a single cabinet that does everything you need IMHO - the Hydrive 410 is going to be as big a pain to move around as a lot of 6x10s and when you have two of them it's double the pain :)

Well if two 410's are too much of a PITA there's always this one:

Haven't heard that one but I did like the two 410's. What can I tell ya? Never been a Hartke fan but the Hydrives are pretty good.

In your other thread, you did finally get around to hinting to everyone that you had two 8 ohm Peaveys that you are not thrilled about. I'll bet if you would finally spill the beans and tell everyone specifically what model cabs you have and what you specifically don't like about them, you might get some more constructive suggestions. Just a thought.

Thanks for the input! At this time, there is really no concern about weight and/or moving the cabs around, as they will relatively stay in one place.

Didn't mean to keep the cabs a secret. To be honest, I am horrible keeping everything straight model wise. I have a 4x10 Peavey TX, and a 1x15 Peavey. The 2nd was bought used, so I am failing on the model. I think the TX is a straight up TX, but it is like 10 yrs more or less old.

Personally, I think the TX needs some loving, after years of having it around, and cats here and there caught sleeping inside via the port hole in the back, I have also wondered if they wiring is a little off. Why? I don't know, again, to me, the cab doesn't seem to be all that loud. When I used this cab, alone, I always had to crank up the amp to get to the point where I could be heard. Sure there are other factors involved, but having this cab for sometime, I just think it is time to get a new one.

So under powering is no issue? Ok, but I have read in a few places that it should be considered. I do understand over powering, pretty straight forward. I do like the ratings on the Hydrive 4x10s, as it gives me the flexibility to upgrade to an LH1000 in the future, or another 1000w head.

I am leaning towards the Hydrives, as people seem to like how they sound. And I also like the idea on pairing a Hartke with a Hartke, so I may go that route. I was just not sure about the whole under powering thing.

I don't plan on buying buy cabs at once, so that shouldn't be an issue. Just my overall plan is to end up with two new 4x10 cabs. In the meantime, one of my current cabs will be used with the new purchase. Going to see if I like the 4x10 Peavey, or the 1x15 Peavey with the new one until I can purchase another.

So my issue with the current cabs, well, not being able to cut through the rest of the band as well as I should. The fact that with my LH500, I am still finding myself pulling the volume up to close to 8 in order to be heard. I really don't think, after all this time the 4x10s are doing or sounding like they should. I have messed with my settings with the LH500, as well as my former amp head, and really didn't like the tone or sound I was getting from them. I like the bottom I get with the 1x15, I just think right now, and in the past, I have always been fighting with the 4x10 Tx.

I had a 410TX and I didn't think it was a very loud cab either. The mids seem to be scooped and I dont know but the rear port may have something to do with how loud it seems. I replaced it with an Avatar 410neo that is louder and more open sounding. Never heard the new hartke gear

*** Update ***

I went with the 8x10 Hydrive...and it is sweet! And loud as hell.

I had 4x10 and a 1x15 LH500 cranked to 2 close to 3 o'clock. With this cab, turned myself all the way down to 9 o'clock!

Always kinda of felt that 4x10 wasn't as loud as it should be. Never took the time to see if it was something that could be fixed either. Adding another cab helped...a little.

I plan on keeping them. You think I should open it up? I know about 8 yrs ago, I had to plug some of the wires back in via the port hole cuz a cat unplugged them.

Pardon, I am lazy...u know? I mean, I plugged the wires back in and I got sound, so away I went.

Anyway. Anyone thinking about this cab, do it! Easy to move around, the grab handle in the back and dolly like design is a nice touch.

The sound is hot. Totally loving my LH500 head even more now, and I even decided to axe the pedal that came with it cuz I dig the tone I got out of it. Though, I may have to try it out to see what it sounds like =)

But honestly, I was thinking about a preamp next, I know the LH500 has one, but something like the Tech 21...but now I think I am just going to enjoy the ride.

Play a Spector 5 string by the way. But was brought up on a Fender P =)

I play a LH500 through either the Hx115 or an Ampeg 810 with a Rickenbacker 4003.

Gotta say I love the tone through the 810 a lot more than through the 115. The 115 gives great lows, really boomy, but I feel like my highs get lost. I can't get a good Ric sound like I want with the 115. With the 810 my Ric really seems to cut through more.

It makes me wish I played larger gigs so I'd have a reason to lug the fridge around.
